Lightmatter is building photonic-based AI data center infrastructure, having invented the world's first 3D-stacked photonics engine called Passage™. The company recently raised $400M in Series D funding at a $4.4B valuation and is scaling across all departments.
As a Photonics Architect, you will define the micro-architecture for a groundbreaking photonic-based communication fabric, working from component-level design to top-level layout. You will partner closely with the internal engineering team to deliver detailed technical specifications and architectural documents that guide development. Reporting to the Sr. Director of Architecture, you will collaborate with photonic and analog engineering teams to optimize power, performance, and area (PPA) metrics for next-generation products.
Key responsibilities include:
- Proposing innovative photonic designs (modulators, receivers, multiplexers, lasers, amplifiers) for the Passage product
- Working with the photonic engineering design team to provide performance, power, and area estimates for photonic devices
- Actively collaborating with the analog engineering team to deliver a high-bandwidth photonic interconnect solution
- Authoring, reviewing, and validating architectural specifications
You will be part of a tight-knit team where individual contributions directly influence product success, solving groundbreaking challenges in building a new kind of computer from the ground up.
REQUIREMENTS:
- PhD in electrical engineering, physics, applied physics, or a related photonics discipline
- In-depth knowledge of photonic devices and semiconductor physics
- Experience with integrated silicon photonics components
- Preferably experience with photonic simulation tools: FDTD, Lumerical, Verilog-A, VPI Photonics
- Ability and desire to collaborate in cross-disciplinary teams
- Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills, particularly for problems without obvious solutions
- Capacity to comply with U.S. export control laws
