Tutor Intelligence is building general-purpose robots for deployment in factories, warehouses, and eventually homes. As a Perception Engineer focused on Robot Safety, you will design and build the perception and monitoring systems that keep people safe around robots operating in shared human-robot environments. You will own safety-critical code end-to-end, from sensor input (lidar and cameras) through decision logic to robot motion commands. Your responsibilities include: • Building perception systems (detection, tracking, monitoring) from lidar and camera data running on production robots • Owning the complete software path from sensor reading to robot stop, including tests, failure modes, and graceful degradation • Designing and reviewing safety-relevant system architecture—specifically how robots decide it is safe to move • Testing systems for weaknesses using replayed field data, constructed scenarios, and hardware fault injection • Collaborating across product teams on any system that affects safety • Contributing to Tutor's safety strategy and the evidence provided to customers as the fleet grows The role emphasizes that safety is non-negotiable: a robot that injures someone is unacceptable, and a robot that cannot be deployed where work happens helps no one. You will help balance safety rigor with practical deployability. Tutor's R&D organization uses the title "Member of Technical Staff" (MoTS) for all engineers and researchers, with levels determined during the interview process. The company expects flexibility—people often shift between projects based on team needs—and maintains a high technical bar across the board to enable that mobility. REQUIREMENTS: • Experience shipping perception or monitoring software on robots or vehicles (lidar or camera pipelines, detection, tracking, or sensor fusion in production) • Ownership of safety-critical code where bugs could cause injury; understanding of how that shapes design, testing, and review • Strong software engineering in Python and C++ (or similar), with knowledge of real-time constraints and code verifiability • Some controls knowledge: stopping distances, latency budgets, and how perception decisions translate to motion commands • Demonstrated ability to identify weaknesses and propose and build fixes NICE TO HAVE: • Familiarity with safety standards (ISO 10218, ISO 13849, ANSI/RIA R15.06) • Experience with safety-rated sensors or safety validation of detectors • Background in warehouses, manufacturing, or environments where robots and people share space • Simulation and replay tooling for perception testing at scale
