Serval is an AI-native automation platform that builds intelligent agents to transform enterprise operations. Founded in early 2024 and backed by Sequoia Capital, Redpoint Ventures, and other leading investors, Serval is trusted by companies like Fox, Notion, Perplexity, Vercel, and Brex to automate high-volume operational work across IT, HR, Finance, Security, Legal, and Engineering.
As People Generalist, you will own the programs and day-to-day operations that support the team and keep the People function running smoothly. This is a foundational role in a growing People function where you will build programs from the ground up as the company scales.
Key responsibilities include:
People Operations: Own core HR operations including employee records, HRIS administration, data integrity, and compliance. Stay ahead of obligations across benefits and employment law (COBRA, ACA, ERISA, California wage-and-hour). Partner with Finance on compensation changes, offer approvals, and headcount tracking. Create documentation, processes, and systems that allow the People function to scale.
Benefits Administration: Administer health, dental, vision, life, disability, 401(k), and commuter benefits. Lead open enrollment, qualifying life events, and broker renewals. Serve as the primary point of contact for employee benefits questions and escalations.
Onboarding & Employee Experience: Own new hire onboarding from signed offer through the first 90 days, including paperwork, I-9/E-Verify, benefits enrollment, and day-one readiness. Partner with Recruiting, IT, and Finance to ensure every new hire is set up and ready. Build and improve the employee experience at every touchpoint. Automate onboarding, benefits changes, and recurring People requests using Serval's own platform.
Requirements:
- 2-5 years in People Operations or HR Generalist roles, ideally at a high-growth startup
- Hands-on experience administering benefits and managing HR operations end to end
- Working knowledge of HRIS platforms such as Rippling, Gusto, Workday, or similar
- Solid understanding of federal and California employment, benefits, and wage-and-hour rules
- High attention to detail and sound judgment with confidential information
- Based in or willing to work from San Francisco HQ five days a week
Nice to have:
- Experience as an early or first People hire at a startup
- Multi-state benefits and compliance experience
- Interest in using AI and automation to improve People workflows
