Mercury is a fintech platform providing banking, treasury, and financial workflow solutions for startups and technology companies. The company operates payment rails including international wires, domestic wires, RTP, ACH, and checks, supported by operational desks, controls, and workflows that ensure safe, reliable money movement.
As Payment Operations Lead, you will lead and develop a Payment Operations team responsible for supporting Mercury Bank's payment infrastructure. Your core responsibilities include:
• Team Leadership: Build and coach a Payment Operations team with clear priorities, strong operating standards, and development support to deliver excellent work.
• Operations at Scale: Design and scale payment operations desks across all payment rails (international wires, domestic wires, RTP, ACH, checks), including workflows, escalation paths, controls, documentation, and quality standards to support reliable money movement at increasing volume.
• Payments Expertise: Apply deep knowledge of payment operations to guide the team through exceptions, investigations, returns, rejects, recalls, and partner requirements in a regulated environment.
• Process & Automation: Drive operational efficiency through process improvement, tooling, automation, AI-enabled workflows, dashboards, and measurement systems that reduce manual work while preserving judgment and control.
• Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Compliance, Risk, Banking Partnerships, and Operations teams to identify bottlenecks, improve workflows, and ensure payment operations scale effectively.
• Metrics & Accountability: Define and track key metrics including productivity, quality, SLA adherence, exception trends, control health, payment rail performance, and customer/partner impact.
• Culture: Create a team culture of ownership, urgency, and high quality, where team members understand both what needs to happen and why it matters.
You bring 3-5+ years of experience in payments, banking operations, payment operations, or related operational roles, ideally in financial institutions, banks, fintechs, or regulated tech companies. You have deep working knowledge of payment rails, money movement operations, payment exceptions, operational risk, and controls. You have demonstrated experience leading and coaching operations teams, with a track record of setting expectations, improving performance, and building strong operating rhythms. You are excited about making operations scalable through process improvement and automation. You understand regulated environments and can balance speed, customer experience, risk, compliance, and operational quality. You communicate clearly under pressure and take ownership of fragile, unclear, or overly manual systems.
