Check is rebuilding payroll infrastructure by powering embedded payroll for businesses of all sizes. The Partner Support team resolves payroll and payroll tax discrepancies that occur after processing—cases where wages are recorded incorrectly, employees are set up in wrong jurisdictions, benefits/deductions are applied in error, or prior provider data is incomplete.
As a Corrections Specialist, you will own payroll correction cases end-to-end: investigating root causes, correcting historical payroll records, determining downstream filing and financial impact, and communicating outcomes to partners. The work is analytical and consequential, involving multi-jurisdiction payroll tax knowledge and precise documentation. Corrections drive amended filings, corrected employee tax forms (W-2C, 1099 corrections), and adjustments to funds owed or refunded.
Key responsibilities include: investigating payroll and tax discrepancies to identify root cause and full scope of impact; correcting historical records (wages, taxes, benefits, deductions, exemptions, work locations); determining which previously submitted filings are affected and identifying required amendments by period, jurisdiction, and form; reconciling tax accounts and determining tax due/refund/credit; assessing materiality and filing obligations; communicating outcomes clearly to partners; partnering with Tax Operations, Payroll Operations, Engineering, Product, and Risk on complex cases; managing high-volume concurrent cases against filing deadlines; and identifying recurring root causes to recommend process, documentation, automation, and product improvements.
Ideal candidates have 3–4 years in payroll operations, payroll tax, tax compliance, or client-facing fintech/HR tech roles. Hands-on experience with payroll corrections, account reconciliation, and amendment processes is valuable. Working knowledge of multi-jurisdiction payroll tax (federal employment taxes, state income tax, unemployment insurance, paid leave, disability programs, annual reconciliations, local taxes) is expected. Strong data analysis skills, advanced spreadsheet proficiency, and SQL experience are advantageous. Experience with Zendesk or similar case management systems is preferred. Availability to support elevated workload during quarter-end and year-end filing periods, and attendance at the annual 3-day spring company offsite, is required.
