Icarus is building solar-powered aircraft that operate at 60,000 feet for weeks at a time, establishing persistent presence in the stratosphere. This Network Engineer role is foundational to the company's mission and involves designing, deploying, and maintaining networking infrastructure for both on-site operations and field-deployed systems.
You will own network engineering across the organization, including design and deployment of routers, switches, VPNs, firewalls (Palo Alto), and network segmentation. You'll solve novel networking challenges at field events and exercises, where each deployment may involve different radio systems, routing paradigms, and connectivity constraints. You'll build flexible network architectures that support rapidly evolving mission requirements.
A significant portion of this role involves government compliance and security. You will own the IATT (Information Assurance Technical and Tactical) and ATO (Authority to Operate) process end-to-end, building on Icarus's existing foundation. You'll conduct STIG reviews, manage ACAS/Nessus vulnerability scans, and coordinate directly with government cybersecurity leads on compliance artifacts and risk acceptance packages. You'll develop security documentation including system security plans, network diagrams, and compliance evidence packages, and build approved CI/CD pipelines for post-authorization product improvements.
A unique aspect of this role is the integration of AI tools into daily workflows. You'll use AI to accelerate compliance documentation, network analysis, vulnerability remediation, and configuration management. AI will be integral to how you execute this role—the posting explicitly notes that before AI, this job would not have been feasible for a single person.
You'll support a factory environment, not just an office. Test benches, CAD workstations, license servers, and manufacturing equipment are all in scope. The culture emphasizes engineering over management overhead, with users (engineers) who will push the boundaries of what you deploy.
Required: 5+ years in network engineering or IT security; deep hands-on expertise with VPNs, routers, switches, firewalls, and network architecture; direct experience taking at least one system through a full IATT process and seeing ATO; familiarity with STIGs, ACAS/Nessus, and DoD cybersecurity frameworks (RMF, NIST 800-171); experience supporting DoD/military customers; comfort with satellite communications, tactical radio networks, and conventional IP networking; strong documentation skills.
Bonus: Tailscale or mesh networking experience, CI/CD and DevSecOps background, aerospace/defense/regulated industry experience, CUI/SBU data handling knowledge.
