Rocket Lab is seeking a Materials & Processes (M&P) Engineer II to support the development of the Neutron large rocket program. The Neutron team is responsible for designing, testing, and qualifying structures and components for a new large-lift launch vehicle, including developing launch and test sites across the United States.
In this role, you will focus on the development, characterization, and qualification of materials and manufacturing processes for the Neutron launch vehicle, supporting both metallic and composite applications. You will work closely with design, analysis, and manufacturing engineers to select materials, develop and optimize processes, and ensure robust, high-performance solutions for vehicle structures and systems.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design elements including thermal protection systems, composites, metallic interfaces, and secondary structural elements, working with analysts to ensure designs meet structural and thermal requirements
- Develop and qualify materials and processes for primary and secondary structures, including metallics, composites, adhesives, and coatings
- Support design teams with material selection and process recommendations to meet structural, thermal, and environmental requirements
- Conduct material characterization, process validation, and operational oversight
- Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including material/process specifications, test reports, and procedures
- Collaborate with suppliers and internal teams to manage, develop, and improve specifications and standards
- Proactively identify and solve technical challenges to enable rapid development and production
- Mentor and technically assist junior engineers
You will thrive in ambiguity and work in a small, high-performing team focused on continued learning and growth. Success will be measured by your technical expertise, ability to lead projects independently, and your ability to collaborate across teams to deliver results.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent qualification
- 2+ years' experience in materials and processes engineering, preferably in aerospace or high-reliability industries
- Experience with material characterization techniques (e.g., mechanical testing, microscopy, NDT)
- For New Zealand-based candidates: You must be eligible to access equipment and data regulated by the United States' International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). You may be ineligible if you do not hold citizenship of Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, the European Union, or a NATO country, or if you hold ineligible dual citizenship or nationality.
