OpenAI's Consumer Monetization team is seeking an experienced Staff+ engineer to architect and build purchasing and subscription experiences across mobile, web, and backend systems. The team owns customer-facing purchasing flows, payments, subscriptions, and billing infrastructure, partnering closely with Product, Design, Growth, and Data Science to enable new product launches and distribution channels. In this role, you will architect purchasing and subscription experiences spanning native iOS/Android, mobile web, and supporting product APIs. You'll partner with Product, Design, and Growth to identify customer needs and shape technical direction. The work involves improving conversion, performance, and reliability through experimentation and customer insights, developing reusable purchasing components, and collaborating across teams to deliver reliable experiences and support product launches. You'll lead initiatives from exploration and technical design through implementation, launch, and ongoing operation, while setting engineering standards and providing technical leadership through hands-on development, design reviews, and mentorship. Approximately 50% of the work will initially be native mobile development, with the remainder split across web and product APIs. This is a hands-on role where you'll remain involved through implementation and delivery while guiding other engineers. The role is based in San Francisco with three days per week in the office. QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS: - Demonstrated technical ownership at Staff level or beyond, with a track record of shaping architecture and delivering substantial initiatives across teams - Deep expertise in iOS or Android with a proven track record of shipping and operating production mobile applications - Professional experience contributing to frontend web or backend development; demonstrated ability and enjoyment working across platforms - Strong engineering fundamentals combined with product intuition and attention to performance, reliability, and customer experience details - Ability to use data and experimentation to identify opportunities and evaluate work impact - Ability to bring clarity to ambiguous problems, align partners, and make thoughtful tradeoffs between immediate product needs and reusable capabilities - Comfort with hands-on engineering while helping other engineers develop judgment and take on broader ownership - Particularly valuable: experience in e-commerce, growth, checkout, subscriptions, or mobile monetization; familiarity with app-store billing integrations and mobile release processes
