Wave is a fintech company building financial services across Africa, with a mission to make the continent cashless. The company operates a mobile money platform enabling cash deposits, withdrawals, peer-to-peer payments, and business transactions across 9 countries with millions of users.
As Merchant Opening Lead, you will manage Wave's field operations team in The Gambia, overseeing the rapid scaling of the merchant network. You'll lead a team of 50+ field-based staff responsible for merchant acquisition, onboarding, training, and ongoing engagement to ensure high transaction volumes and network quality.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing the daily operations and performance of the merchant opening team
- Building and executing the roadmap for merchant acquisition and network growth in The Gambia
- Designing scalable processes for merchant onboarding in compliance with regulatory requirements
- Collaborating with internal teams (distribution, compliance, marketing, support) to align objectives and operationalize strategies
- Developing training programs to build team capability
- Analyzing merchant performance, identifying growth opportunities, and addressing blockers
- Working with Risk & Fraud to minimize fraud and security threats
- Contributing to Wave's global playbook for faster market launches
- Leading by Wave's values and fostering a high-performance team culture
You'll work from the Kotu office with regular field travel. The role requires deep knowledge of The Gambia's geography and merchant landscape, fluency in English, Mandinka, and Wolof, and at least 5 years of network management experience with 2+ years managing large field teams.
