Salary: USD 95,000 - 125,000 / annual

Red 6 is an innovative augmented reality (AR) technology startup specializing in synthetic air combat training. The company's ATARS product enables pilots to simulate realistic cognitive challenges of flying in dynamic outdoor environments. In this Mechanical Engineer II role, you will translate high-level product needs into actionable mechanical design solutions within a cross-functional team environment. You will own mechanical design and engineering reviews, develop mechanical drawings and specifications, and review vendor proposals for technical compliance. Key responsibilities include: - Lead mechanical engineering and design review activities across disciplines - Develop mechanical drawings, specifications, and bills of materials (BOMs) - Gather and define component-level design requirements with stakeholders - Conduct R&D to identify optimal technologies within cost constraints - Apply precision-tolerance techniques to optical and mechanical systems design - Drive design improvements addressing customer reliability and usability issues - Mature early prototypes through increasing fidelity to production-ready products - Perform structural analysis using hand calculations and finite element analysis (FEA) - Create production drawings and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) - Plan and execute simulation, modeling, design, and test activities throughout product development - Troubleshoot system-level issues and develop verification tests - Create development test plans ensuring compliance with industry standards - Research and apply advanced materials and manufacturing processes - Provide status reports and technical documentation - Collaborate with Project Management on product schedules This role requires hands-on experience with precision mechanisms, electromechanical systems, and optical systems in consumer electronics or comparable product development. You will work at the intersection of mechanical, optical, electrical, and thermal design challenges. REQUIREMENTS: - Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering discipline (or equivalent practical experience) - 2–5 years of hands-on product design and prototyping experience - Demonstrated work in precision mechanisms, electromechanical systems, and/or optical systems - Experience collaborating with Industrial Design, Engineering, Research, and cross-functional stakeholders - Strong knowledge of 3D mathematics, numerical methods, modeling, and simulation - Strong design-for-manufacturability (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) skills - Knowledge of manufacturing methods and rapid-prototyping processes - Experience with mechanical integration of PCBs, PCBAs, and flexible circuits - Understanding of system- and module-level tradeoffs among mechanical, optical, electrical, thermal, and manufacturing performance - Experience creating mechanical test procedures and supporting product verification - Experience with FEA, CFD, and related engineering-analysis tools - Experience translating Industrial Design intent into manufacturable mechanical design - Experience with production processes: plastic injection molding, casting, metal injection molding (MIM), and machining - Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance; U.S. citizenship required for clearance eligibility PREFERRED: - Experience with AR/VR products or technologies - Experience with microelectronics integration, thermal design, and fabrication - Experience designing optical systems - Experience designing for environmental durability (dust and water ingress protection)
