Normal Computing is an applied AI company building foundational hardware and software for the semiconductor industry and AI infrastructure. As the founding mechanical engineer on the hardware team, you will define the physical design of AI inference hardware based on the company's Thermo In-Memory Computing architecture, from the accelerator through the server to the rack level. You will report to the head of hardware systems and partner with silicon, systems, and deployment engineers, as well as external design and manufacturing partners. Your responsibilities span the full product lifecycle: mechanical design of the electromechanical inference hardware including form factor, thermal solution, airflow, connectors, and cabling; system configuration from assembly structure and BOM to component envelopes; server integration of compute, host platform, networking, and power in the chassis with validation of airflow and thermals; rack integration including configuration, power distribution, cabling, weight planning, and mounting approaches for standard and open-rack formats; build readiness including drawing and BOM releases, manufacturability reviews, supplier engineering, and resolution of build failures; and compliance and reliability through mechanical and thermal qualification, test specifications, shock/vibration/thermal cycling, root-cause analysis of failures, and coordination of safety and EMC certification. You will own the mechanical decisions that set the foundation for the systems Normal ships and the hardware that customers run. The role is ideal for someone who thrives on turning system architecture into hardware and takes pride in catching problems before the build phase. Candidates from OEM and ODM server teams, hyperscaler infrastructure teams, and earlier-stage hardware companies are well-positioned for this role. REQUIREMENTS: - Six or more years of shipped work owning accelerator or server hardware, with experience taking designs from prototype through qualification and production - Strong mechanical design skills in SolidWorks, Creo, NX, or similar CAD tools, including FEA, tolerance analysis, and design for manufacturing; ability to release production-ready drawings - Hands-on thermal design and validation experience for server or accelerator hardware with strong first-principles reasoning and practical lab experience - Experience integrating server hardware into standard chassis and racks with understanding of mechanical interfaces and serviceability - Electrical fluency to read schematics and collaborate with electrical engineers on power and interconnect integration - Experience directing external design or manufacturing partners, including design review, build documentation release, and issue resolution during builds BONUS: - Direct experience converting industrial design concepts and appearance models into production mechanical designs - Experience shipping hardware to external customers including certification, documentation, and service obligations - Experience with soft and hard tooling decisions and fixture/test setup design with ODMs or contract manufacturers - Experience integrating liquid cooling into server or rack systems - Experience designing to Open Compute Project or other open modular server and rack architectures
