Antares is developing mass-producible, inherently safe microreactors for terrestrial, underwater, and space applications, with a mission to make clean energy abundant from Earth to the Asteroid Belt. The company has raised over $600M in venture capital and holds hundreds of millions in contracts with military services, NASA, and the Department of Energy. The team includes veterans from SpaceX, the White House, the Pentagon, the Department of Energy, MIT, and national laboratories.
As a Materials Engineer, you will be central to developing and qualifying all materials used in Antares' reactor systems. Your work will span the full lifecycle: designing and conducting physical, thermal, and mechanical testing that replicates reactor operating conditions; performing materials characterization and root-cause failure investigations; and employing statistical methods to evaluate how process variables and environmental factors affect material properties. You will interface closely with manufacturing, neutronics, mechanical, testing, and quality engineers to integrate materials into the overall system, define operating limits based on material properties, and optimize manufacturing processes. You'll also work with vendors and external collaborators to identify and address critical gaps in material behavior under the company's demanding operating conditions.
The role demands someone who can learn quickly and develop deep expertise across a wide range of materials—ceramics, metallic alloys, stainless steels, nickel-based superalloys—becoming the go-to subject matter expert internally. You'll apply fundamental materials science knowledge to practical manufacturing challenges in a fast-paced environment while driving innovation in nuclear materials. The position is based in Torrance, CA, in a brand-new 322,000 sq ft facility with R&D and production capabilities.

- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related field
- 2+ years of experience in materials engineering
- Experience with metals
- Proficiency in optical and electron microscopy and mechanical property evaluation
- Go-getter attitude and ability to execute
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- 3+ years demonstrated experience as part of an integrated team in a production setting
- Knowledge of radiation effects in materials
- Knowledge of stainless steel, nickel-based superalloys, and ceramics
- Coatings experience
