Charge Robotics is a Series A startup building robots that construct solar farms. The company addresses a critical labor bottleneck in solar construction—1 in 5 solar installations in the US occurred last year, but traditional construction companies cannot scale fast enough. Charge's robotic systems directly accelerate renewable energy deployment. The company is MIT-founded and backed by top-tier investors including Founders Fund, Energy Impact Partners, Lux Capital, and Y Combinator (S21).
As the first manufacturing engineer, you will lead the scaling of production for Charge's state-of-the-art robotic systems from prototype to full production. You'll work closely with internal design engineers, supply chain teams, and technicians, as well as external manufacturing partners, vendors, and customers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the build and scale of production for robotic systems that assemble solar farms in the field
- Collaborating with design engineers to ensure manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of assembly
- Developing and maintaining manufacturing documentation, drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs)
- Supporting part qualification, incoming inspection, and supplier quality initiatives
- Accelerating the speed and ease of robot production to enable faster clean energy deployment
- Traveling approximately 10% of the time to field sites (solar construction sites) to work directly with deployed products
This role offers significant impact: your work will directly enable the deployment of gigawatts of clean electricity generation. You'll have a large influence on the company's direction and will be compensated accordingly.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 4–8 years of experience bringing complex electromechanical products from prototype to production, especially systems involving metal fabrication, rigging, and heavy machinery
- Ability to read and create mechanical drawings and manufacturing documentation
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with engineers, suppliers, technicians, and leadership
- Based in or able to relocate to the SF Bay Area; able to work 4–5 days per week from San Leandro HQ
- Open to approximately 10% travel to field sites
- Enthusiasm for seeing robots deployed on actual solar farms
NICE-TO-HAVE:
- Degree in a related field
- Experience with ION manufacturing software
- Experience sourcing and qualifying suppliers and contract manufacturers
- Familiarity with DFM (Design for Manufacturability), DFA (Design for Assembly), and/or GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) principles
- Interest in growing into a leadership role as systems and teams scale
