Osmo is a digital olfaction company developing technology to give computers a sense of smell for applications in fragrance, manufacturing, security, medicine, and beyond. This is a ground-floor opportunity to build and lead the Quality Control function from the foundation up.
You will own quality across the entire manufacturing operation: incoming raw materials and finished fragrance products. Your responsibilities include:
- Judge incoming material test results, distinguishing real defects from normal variation in natural materials using fragrance-industry expertise that automated testing cannot replicate
- Conduct olfactive (sensory) evaluation of raw materials and finished goods using trained judgment
- Run triangulation testing on outgoing products to confirm consistency before customer shipment
- Design and continuously improve QC processes, documentation, systems, and SOPs from the ground up
- Make accept/reject decisions in real time, multiple times daily, escalating only genuinely ambiguous cases
- Identify process gaps and drive fixes independently
- Lead root cause analysis on non-conforming materials, out-of-spec results, and customer quality concerns; drive corrective actions
- Maintain lab documentation, SOPs, method records, equipment calibration, and qualification
- Monitor and report on QC turnaround time, effectiveness, and recurring quality issues
- Build and lead a QC team as headcount grows
- Partner cross-functionally with Purchasing, Warehouse, Shipping/Receiving, Fragrance Development, Production, and the internal AI team
Success in the first 6–12 months means establishing a working QC program with documented processes and systems, qualifying raw materials at scale, and delivering product to customers cleanly and consistently without post-shipment holds or rejections.
Osmo is headquartered in Elizabeth, NJ, with an additional office in Somerville, MA. Complimentary shuttle service is provided from Brooklyn and Newark, NJ. This role requires on-site presence in Elizabeth 5 days per week.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 5+ years direct fragrance QC experience required (8–12 years ideal); adjacent industries (flavor, cosmetics, specialty chemicals) do not substitute
- Demonstrated experience building or fixing a QC process, not just executing within an existing one
- Trained nose with organoleptic and sensory evaluation skills specific to fragrance raw materials and finished goods
- Comfortable making high-frequency accept/reject calls independently without over-escalating routine judgment
- Working knowledge of quality documentation, audits, CAPA, and root cause processes in regulated manufacturing
- Direct communicator who thrives in fast-moving, still-being-built environments with low bureaucracy
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related scientific field preferred; equivalent hands-on experience accepted
