Salary: CAD 185,300 - 239,800 / annual
Thumbtack is a marketplace platform that helps millions of homeowners care for their homes by connecting them with local service professionals. The company operates a community of 300,000+ service businesses and provides personalized guidance, AI tools, and hiring experiences across the U.S.
You will lead Thumbtack's financial data engineering team, which is responsible for the foundational data models that support the entire marketplace: event taxonomy, core entity models for requests, projects, pros and customers, and financial models used for company reporting. The team is organized into two domain-aligned subteams—one embedded with Finance and another with Supply Acquisition and Business Platforms—each owning its own roadmap.
The role sits at the intersection of financial data governance and rapid product iteration. Thumbtack's revenue models must be auditable, reconcilable, and resilient to upstream changes, while product teams continually evolve offerings that affect those same models. The team has already implemented anomaly detection in core pipelines; the next phase involves developing predictive capabilities to show how proposed product and data-model changes could affect financial results before release.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering well-modeled, durable datasets for requests, projects, pros, and customers that other teams depend on
- Partnering with Finance to ensure revenue models reconcile, hold their definitions under upstream change, and remain auditable
- Collaborating with Supply Acquisition and Business Platforms teams on their roadmaps and translating priorities into engineering work
- Raising reliability across core pipelines through dbt tests, CI automation, anomaly detection, and clear data contracts
- Hiring and developing mid-level and senior data engineers, and growing technical leads who can own domains end-to-end
- Setting engineering standards for the team including code review, testing, and prioritization practices
- Leading as a technical manager—you will make and defend modeling and architecture decisions, not just route them
The tech stack includes BigQuery, dbt, Airflow, and MetricFlow. dbt testing and CI are already established with significant opportunities to expand automation. The team also owns governance tooling that protects core pipelines and maintains trusted data across the company. Thumbtack is rebuilding platforms for sales, support, and trust & safety around API-first systems and agentic workflows; this team will help architect the resulting data beginning next year.
Several engineers will be joining around the same time as you, giving you a direct role in shaping how the team operates and its culture.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 2+ years managing engineers, or experience as a tech lead ready to step into first-line management
- 6+ years building data or software systems in production
- Depth in SQL and dimensional and event modeling; comfort in Python. You will participate in code reviews, debug DAGs when issues arise, and engage in modeling design discussions
- Experience owning datasets that other teams depend on, with demonstrated testing, contracts, and versioning discipline
- Track record of translating ambiguous business questions into durable models and metric definitions
- Strong collaboration and written communication skills. This team's leverage comes from working well with partner teams that have competing priorities
