Salary: USD 199,800 - 303,600 / annual
Thumbtack is a marketplace platform helping millions of homeowners care for their homes by connecting them with local service professionals. The Data Engineering team is responsible for foundational marketplace data: event taxonomy, core entity models for requests/projects/pros/customers, and financial models supporting company reporting.
You will lead a data engineering team organized into two domain-aligned subteams: one partnering closely with Finance, the other embedded with Supply Acquisition and Business Platforms. The team is actively growing with several new engineers joining around the same time as you. Each subteam owns its roadmap, giving you direct influence over priorities and team operations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Deliver well-modeled, durable datasets for requests, projects, pros, and customers that other teams depend on.
- Partner with Finance to ensure revenue models reconcile, hold their definitions under upstream change, and remain auditable.
- Partner with Supply Acquisition and Business Platforms teams on their roadmaps, translating priorities into engineering work.
- Raise reliability standards on core pipelines through dbt tests, CI, anomaly detection, and clear data contracts.
- Hire and develop mid-level and senior data engineers; develop technical leads who can own domains end-to-end.
- Set engineering standards for the forming team, including code review, testing, and prioritization discipline.
- Lead as a technical manager: you'll make and defend modeling and architecture decisions, not just route them.
The team works at the intersection of financial data governance and rapid product iteration. The stack includes BigQuery, dbt, Airflow, and MetricFlow. The team has already introduced anomaly detection into core pipelines and is developing predictive capabilities to show how proposed product and data-model changes could affect financial results before release. Thumbtack is also rebuilding platforms around API-first systems and agentic workflows; this team will help architect resulting data structures.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 2+ years managing engineers, or experience as a tech lead ready to step into first-line management.
- 6+ years building data or software systems in production.
- Depth in SQL and dimensional and event modeling; comfort in Python. You'll participate in code reviews, debug DAGs, and lead modeling design discussions.
- Experience owning datasets that other teams depend on, with demonstrated testing, contracts, and versioning discipline.
- Track record of translating ambiguous business questions into durable models and metric definitions.
- Strong collaboration and written communication skills. Team leverage comes from working well with partner teams that have competing priorities.
