SandboxAQ is a high-growth AI company emerging from Alphabet Inc. (2022) that develops Large Quantitative Models (LQMs) to address challenges in life sciences, financial services, navigation, cybersecurity, and other sectors. The company is backed by leading growth capital investors and operates as a global, tech-focused team of AI, chemistry, cybersecurity, physics, mathematics, and engineering experts.
You will lead a small, highly technical team of AI engineers while remaining deeply hands-on with engineering and research. This is a dual-track role: you'll manage and mentor team members while actively shipping production code and contributing to technical direction.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and growing a small team while staying involved in hands-on engineering and research
- Setting technical direction, breaking down ambiguous problems, and establishing execution plans
- Building a culture of ownership, low-ego collaboration, experimentation, and high standards
- Creating new agentic capabilities, including frameworks for monitoring, guardrailing, and evaluating agents
- Performing classical ML tasks: exploratory data analysis, feature engineering, model fine-tuning, and rapid prototyping
- Translating AI research into applicable features and software engineering projects in collaboration with Product and Research teams
- Contributing production-ready code and technical designs for scalable, reliable software
The focus areas are agentic collaboration, trust, and ROI—specifically security (discovery, evaluation, red teaming, monitoring, guardrails), quality (measuring agent ROI and improvements), and collaboration (bringing humans and agents together with shared context).
You'll work alongside ML experts, security experts, mathematicians, and software engineers. The role offers freedom to explore, collaborate, publish, and deploy while shaping the field of agentic collaboration and trust.
REQUIREMENTS:
- BSc in Computer Science or related field with exposure to AI/ML
- Deep expertise in AI/ML, software engineering, or AI security
- Strong programming skills in Python and relevant ML/agentic frameworks
- Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally with high degree of end-to-end ownership, delivering real-world outcomes
- Ability to pick up other programming languages and technologies as needed
HIGHLY DESIRED:
- PhD in Computer Science or related field with focus on AI/ML
- Hands-on experience with agent orchestration, agent harnesses, agent teams, jailbreaking/prompt injection, red teaming, data poisoning/evasion attacks, secure model deployment, sandboxing, or detection/monitoring for AI misuse
- Open source project contributions
- Fast-paced startup environment experience
- Cybersecurity background (a plus, not essential)
