SandboxAQ is a high-growth AI company emerging from Alphabet Inc. (2022) that develops Large Quantitative Models (LQMs) to address challenges in life sciences, financial services, navigation, cybersecurity, and other sectors. The company is backed by leading growth capital investors and operates as a global, tech-focused team of AI experts, chemists, cybersecurity specialists, physicists, mathematicians, and engineers.
You will lead a small, highly technical team of AI engineers while remaining deeply hands-on with engineering and research work. The AI team is building the future of agentic collaboration, trust, and ROI—making agents work effectively independently, in teams, and with humans. Key focus areas include security (agent discovery, evaluation, red teaming, monitoring, guardrails), quality (measuring agent ROI and suggesting improvements), and collaboration (integrating humans and agents with shared context).
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and growing a small team while staying deeply involved in hands-on engineering and research
- Setting technical direction, breaking down ambiguous problems, and establishing practical execution plans
- Creating new agentic capabilities, including frameworks for monitoring, guardrailing, and evaluating agents
- Performing classical ML tasks: exploratory data analysis, feature engineering, model fine-tuning, and rapid prototyping
- Translating AI research into applicable features and software engineering projects in collaboration with Product and Research teams
- Contributing production-ready code and technical designs for scalable, reliable software
You will thrive at the intersection of AI and software engineering, with deep understanding of how models and agents work, how they fail, how they can be protected and improved. You have hands-on production experience with agents, know current trends, and are opinionated about the future. You combine the curiosity of a researcher, the rigor of an engineer, and the creativity of a hacker. You'll help set technical direction, raise quality standards, mentor team members, and drive fast execution from research insight to real-world product impact.
REQUIREMENTS:
- BSc in Computer Science or related field with exposure to AI/ML
- Deep expertise in AI/ML, software engineering, or AI security
- Strong programming skills in Python and relevant ML/agentic frameworks
- Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally with high degree of end-to-end ownership, delivering real-world outcomes
- Ability to pick up other programming languages and technologies as needed
HIGHLY DESIRED:
- PhD in Computer Science or related field with focus on AI/ML
- Hands-on experience with agent orchestration, agent harnesses, agent teams, jailbreaking/prompt injection, red teaming, data poisoning/evasion attacks, secure model deployment, sandboxing, or detection/monitoring for AI misuse
- Open source project contributions
- Fast-paced startup environment experience
- Cybersecurity background (a plus, not essential)
