Ethos is a life insurance technology company transforming how life insurance is bought, sold, and underwritten. The company operates a three-sided platform serving consumers, agents, and carriers, offering instant, accessible products with no medical exams required—just a few health questions.
You will join the underwriting team as a Life Underwriter, responsible for evaluating and making risk decisions on life insurance applications. Your core duties include:
• Evaluate individual applications by assessing medical history, physical condition, occupational hazards, and financial background to determine whether to accept, modify, or decline risk
• Apply underwriting policies, guidelines, practices, and procedures consistently
• Review and summarize Attending Physician Statements (APS) and Electronic Health Records (EHR)
• Communicate underwriting decisions clearly in both written and verbal formats
• Work independently on assigned requests with minimal direction
• Champion process improvements while maintaining mortality expectations
• Gather necessary information efficiently to support decision-making
• Operate effectively in an ambiguous, fast-moving startup environment

**Requirements:**
• 3–5+ years of experience in medical Life/Health underwriting (US-based underwriting experience is a plus)
• Experience assessing and summarizing Attending Physician Statements (APS) and Electronic Health Records (EHR) highly preferred
• Demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of risk selection: medical, non-medical, and financial
• Strong critical thinking and independent problem-solving skills
• Experience underwriting both term and permanent life insurance products
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Positive, inclusive, agile, and collaborative mindset
• In-process or completed industry designations (e.g., LOMA, ALMI, FMLI, ALU, FALU) preferred
