Antares is a venture-backed advanced nuclear energy company building mass-producible, inherently safe microreactors for terrestrial, underwater, and space applications. The company has raised over $600M in funding and holds hundreds of millions in contracts with the military, NASA, and the Department of Energy. The team includes veterans from SpaceX, the White House, Pentagon, DOE, MIT, and national laboratories.
The Licensing Engineer will develop and execute licensing and permitting strategies for the Antares R1 product line and future commercial microreactor deployments. This role is central to advancing regulatory pathways including Department of the Army, Department of Energy, and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approvals.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and executing licensing and regulatory engagement strategies
- Identifying applicable regulatory and permitting requirements and translating them into design, analysis, and documentation requirements
- Preparing licensing plans, technical briefs, white papers, topical reports, application content, and responses to regulator questions
- Tracking regulator and stakeholder comments, commitments, and closure status
- Evaluating design and program products for compliance with applicable requirements
- Developing regulatory positions and evaluating alternative compliance approaches
- Planning and supporting regulator and stakeholder engagements, presenting technical positions directly when appropriate
- Coordinating cross-functional reviews with engineering, safety analysis, operations, quality, security, and program management teams
- Maintaining awareness of regulatory developments and emerging licensing approaches for advanced reactors
- Supporting the development of scalable, repeatable licensing processes for future deployments
The successful candidate will work closely with engineering, safety analysis, operations, quality, program management, customers, and regulators. The role operates in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment requiring strong cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Antares values systems thinking, obsession over end users, being unconstrained by convention, going where the work is (in-person collaboration), and operating in the grey with nuance in pursuit of truth.

- Bachelor's degree in engineering or closely related technical discipline
- Experience in systems design or highly regulated technical environment
- Ability to interpret regulatory requirements and convert them into clear, implementable, and verifiable design or program requirements
- Strong technical writing, organization, and communication skills
- Ability to understand complex regulatory relationships and explain the basis for proposed approaches
- Demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions, evaluate competing alternatives, and communicate tradeoffs
- Ability to work across disciplines and drive actions to closure in ambiguous, fast-paced environment
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Experience with NRC reactor licensing, DOE authorization-basis development, or nuclear safety analysis
- Experience supporting advanced reactors, commercial nuclear facilities, DOE nuclear facilities, national laboratories, or university research reactors
- Experience preparing regulatory submittals, responding to regulator comments or requests for additional information, and tracking commitments to closure
- Familiarity with NRC licensing frameworks including Parts 50, 52, and 70, and emerging advanced-reactor licensing approaches
- Experience interfacing with government agencies, customers, installation stakeholders, or other external approval authorities
- Working knowledge of systems engineering, design control, safety analysis, nuclear quality assurance, or configuration management
