Ello is a Series A edtech company building an AI teacher to help children learn globally. The company's first product, Read with Ello, helps tens of thousands of kids weekly learn to read using AI that listens, adapts, and generates personalized stories. Ello is now scaling into a complete AI teacher combining language, speech, and memory for interactive learning.
You will be Ello's first dedicated Growth Engineer, helping define and build the growth engineering function from the ground up. This is a high-ownership role for someone who wants to establish a new function rather than join an existing one.
Key responsibilities:
- Help build Ello's growth-engineering strategy, operating model, tooling, and standards
- Develop and own growth features end-to-end across mobile, web, backend, and lifecycle channels from idea through launch and iteration
- Identify high-leverage opportunities across acquisition, activation, engagement, retention, and referral
- Design and run small, fast experiments; define success metrics; instrument experiences; and turn results into clear next steps
- Improve critical journeys such as onboarding, signup, parent experiences, referrals, and notifications
- Build or evolve experimentation, analytics, and data systems to increase team velocity
- Connect quantitative signals with qualitative insight into children's and parents' motivations and behavior
- Partner closely with product, design, engineering, marketing, and leadership while independently driving work forward
The company is ~50 people, headquartered in San Francisco with a second office in Nairobi. They work in-person from the SF office and believe in face-to-face collaboration. The team includes expertise from Stanford, Berkeley, Google, Apple, and is backed by investors including Goodwater Capital, Homebrew, Reed Hastings, Khosla Ventures, and others. Ello was part of Y Combinator's W20 batch and was featured on TIME's Best Inventions and Fortune's Change the World.
REQUIREMENTS:
The strongest candidates will excel in at least two of these areas and be solid in the third:
- Engineering: independently ship high-quality, full-stack product work and build for rapid iteration
- Growth and product judgment: understand funnels, growth loops, user motivation, and how product/incentive changes affect behavior
- Experimentation and data: define metrics, design and interpret experiments, use data to make product decisions without waiting for a data scientist
Additional requirements:
- Track record of shipping product or growth initiatives with measurable user or business impact
- Strong ownership and bias to action; ability to create from nothing, turn ambiguity into a plan, and follow through
- Comfort working across the stack; experience with Flutter, native iOS/Android, React, Python, or comparable technologies
- Hands-on experience with analytics and experimentation tools (SQL, Mixpanel, Amplitude, Segment, or equivalent)
- Strong product sense with empathy for user motivations and ability to connect data trends to human behavior
- Collaborative, direct communication style; ability to work effectively across engineering, product, design, marketing, and business
- Judgment to balance speed with quality; confidence to ship partial solutions when that is the fastest way to learn
Nice to have:
- Experience building products or features for children and parents
- Experience with mobile growth, consumer subscriptions, lifecycle systems, or referral products
- Experience integrating third-party systems (Stripe, Twilio, SendGrid, CRMs)
- Experience using GenAI tools to increase development velocity or working with GenAI products and evaluation pipelines
- Experience helping build a new function, practice, or team
