Bankjoy is a Y Combinator and Bessemer Venture Partner-backed fintech startup transforming how community banks and credit unions operate. The company provides modern digital banking products including mobile banking, online banking, account opening, loan origination, and conversational AI. As Android Tech Lead, you will own the technical direction, architecture, and delivery of Bankjoy's Android banking platform while managing a team of three Android engineers. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will write production code daily, drive architectural decisions, and ensure the Android product meets the reliability, security, and performance standards that financial institutions and their members depend on. You will lead technical strategy and architecture, defining the Android roadmap and enforcing engineering standards across the team. You'll drive adoption of modern Android practices including Jetpack Compose, MVVM/Clean Architecture, coroutines, and dependency injection. You'll own delivery across digital banking value streams, breaking down complex initiatives into executable tasks with clear dependencies and timelines. On the hands-on side, you'll contribute directly to feature development, code reviews, debugging, and performance optimization while maintaining meaningful individual coding contributions. You'll manage three Android engineers through regular 1:1s, performance feedback, and mentoring on Android best practices and fintech domain knowledge. You'll collaborate cross-functionally with Product Management, iOS, QA, backend engineering, and DevOps to deliver a seamless mobile banking experience. You'll also participate in the on-call rotation for production support, respond to urgent issues impacting clients, and ensure Android implementations meet financial services compliance requirements while applying mobile security best practices like certificate pinning, secure storage, and biometric authentication. REQUIREMENTS: - 6+ years of Android development experience with deep Kotlin expertise - 2+ years in a tech lead or senior engineering leadership role managing direct reports - Strong proficiency in Jetpack Compose and modern Android UI development - Solid understanding of Android architecture patterns (MVVM, Clean Architecture, Repository pattern) - Experience with coroutines, Flow, and reactive programming patterns - Proficiency with dependency injection frameworks (Hilt or Dagger) - Experience with Android testing frameworks (JUnit, Espresso, Mockk) - Familiarity with RESTful API integration and mobile networking patterns - Experience with CI/CD pipelines for Android (GitHub Actions, Bitrise, or equivalent) - Proficiency with version control workflows (Git, pull request reviews, branching strategies) - Demonstrated success leading Android development in fintech, banking, or similarly regulated product environments - Proven ability to manage and develop engineers through 1:1s, code reviews, and performance feedback - Experience working in value stream or squad-based engineering models with cross-functional collaboration - Track record of delivering high-quality Android products on time in fast-moving startup environments - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills NICE TO HAVE: - Experience with digital banking platforms (mobile banking, account opening, loan origination, payment flows) - Familiarity with credit union or community bank technology environments - Experience with mobile security implementation in regulated financial services - Exposure to AI-assisted development tools (Codex, Copilot, Cursor, or equivalent) - Experience migrating Android UI from XML layouts to Jetpack Compose
