Salary: EUR 74,200 - 90,000 / annual
MariaDB is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead development of a highly scalable, geo-distributed, performant database solution. You will manage a team of Software Engineers while driving the technical direction of distributed database systems used by 75% of the Fortune 500.
In this role, you will own the development and testing of core database infrastructure, focusing on replication, sharding, concurrency, and performance optimization. You'll work on both on-premise and cloud-based deployments, collaborating with cross-functional teams globally and contributing to open-source initiatives.
Key responsibilities include:
- Ensuring scalability, performance, and reliability of the database system
- Leading a team of Software Engineers on the project
- Designing and shipping new features in collaboration with cross-functional teams
- Troubleshooting and resolving complex issues in distributed environments
- Profiling, debugging, and fine-tuning performance using JFR, JMC, async-profiler, VisualVM, and custom tools
- Developing and optimizing data structures for high data-intensive scenarios
- Implementing optimal strategies for data storage and network transmission across nodes, including failure handling and recovery
- Implementing high-availability algorithms for cluster resilience
- Investigating and debugging data consistency issues in multi-node clusters
You'll work in a small, highly skilled team where your contributions have direct impact on systems serving billions of users daily.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 4+ years of Java programming experience
- Deep knowledge of concurrency in Java, Java Memory Model, and/or concurrency models in other systems
- Excellent Java SE knowledge including IO and JVM internals
- Experience with SQL databases
- Experience troubleshooting Java applications and/or databases
- Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and debugging skills
- Experience working effectively in fast-paced, collaborative environments
- Deep SQL knowledge (MariaDB/MySQL/PostgreSQL/Apache Ignite/GridGain)
- Passion for distributed systems (Raft, MVCC, ACID)
- Understanding of MVCC and P2PL, and differences between Snapshot Isolation and REPEATABLE READ
STRONG PLUS:
- Experience with NoSQL and/or distributed databases
- Experience building high-load distributed systems and algorithms
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and/or public cloud (AWS, GCE, Azure)
- Open-source contributions, automation expertise, or performance/load testing
- Active use of AI
