OpenAI's Robotics team is building general-purpose robotics and advancing toward AGI-level intelligence in real-world environments. The company is transitioning from laboratory-scale development to factory-scale operations and needs to establish a supply-chain organization.
You will build and operate the inventory function from the ground up. This is a highly hands-on role that starts with establishing core infrastructure: designing stockrooms, selecting racks, shelving, bins, labeling systems, barcode scanners, and workflows. You will personally execute receiving, organizing inventory, performing counts, moving parts between buildings, and resolving discrepancies.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building inventory operations across OpenAI facilities from scratch
- Designing and setting up stockrooms, receiving areas, and material-storage locations
- Executing core inventory activities: receiving, labeling, putaway, picking, kitting, issuing, cycle counting, transfers, and adjustments
- Establishing receiving procedures for incoming material identification, recording, inspection, and quarantine
- Creating location structures, naming conventions, barcode workflows, and standard work
- Maintaining accurate visibility into inventory existence, location, and availability
- Establishing cycle-counting and physical-inventory programs, investigating discrepancies
- Owning internal logistics and material movement between facilities
- Developing controls for serialized, lot-controlled, high-value, consigned, returned, obsolete, and nonconforming material
- Serving as business owner for inventory tools and workflows
- Partnering with systems team to translate operational needs into requirements
- Creating procedures and training for replication at new facilities
- Identifying inventory risks, shortages, excess material, and process breakdowns
As the operation grows, you will hire and manage contractors or onsite inventory administrators, though the role will retain a significant individual-contributor component with accountability for day-to-day execution.
Success within 6 months means transforming empty or informal storage into organized, functional stockrooms; establishing consistent receiving, storage, counting, and transfer processes; creating reliable visibility into inventory; implementing location controls and labeling standards; and building a reliable inter-building logistics process with clear ownership and traceability.
