Halter is transforming global agriculture through innovative hardware and software that enables farmers and ranchers to operate more productively and sustainably. The company is backed by tier-1 investors including Founders Fund, Bessemer Venture Partners, and DCVC. You will join the Field Operations team as an Intermediate Software Engineer, sitting at the intersection of hardware operations, customer impact, and engineering. This role combines operational support with internal tool development to scale Halter's global fleet operations. Your responsibilities will split between two areas: **Fleet Monitoring & Operational Support:** Monitor hardware performance metrics to proactively identify collar and tower issues. Investigate and respond to technical support tickets related to collar and tower functionality. Lead end-to-end investigations from triage through root cause analysis to resolution, deciding when to escalate to relevant teams. Collaborate with customer teams to ensure efficient handover and resolution. Communicate cross-functionally with Deployment, Product, and Engineering teams on incidents and root causes. Contribute to and maintain internal documentation and knowledge bases for known issues. **Tooling, Systems & Scaling Improvements:** Identify opportunities to remove manual work and improve internal workflows. Own and build internal tools that support fleet monitoring, investigation, and incident response for a scalable global operating model. Improve internal process flows including triage pathways, escalation rules, investigation checklists, and automation to reduce time-to-resolution. Create systems that surface issues earlier through improved alerting logic, trend analysis, and automated detection of known failure modes. Work with engineering teams to integrate tooling with core systems and improve data quality and visibility. Optionally, you may visit customer farms to work through hardware issues alongside field-based teams. The role is full-time with some rostered on-call. Regular days off are Saturday/Sunday with weekend on-call rostered. Based in Auckland HQ. **Requirements:** - Hands-on experience in technical operations, support engineering, or similar role. Background in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mechatronics, or similar is useful but not required. - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to break down ambiguous problems into clear next steps. - Confidence working with systems and data, including dashboards, tools, workflows, logs, and APIs. - Track record of building tools or automations that others rely on, designing scalable workflows, and making systems easier to operate. - Strong technical troubleshooting skills with practical, hands-on approach. - Excellent attention to detail and ability to identify patterns in data and turn them into action. - Clear and concise communication skills, including ability to explain technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences. - Strong time management skills and ability to prioritize across urgent support needs and longer-term improvement work. - Comfort operating in fast-paced environments where priorities shift quickly. - Passion for supporting farmers and ranchers and contributing to Halter's mission. Depending on your background, some of these will be more relevant: - Frontend: strong UX intuition, modern frontend frameworks (React, React Native a bonus), eye for performance and polish on real devices. - Backend: building and scaling REST APIs, distributed systems, and event-driven services. Comfort with both relational and non-relational databases. Node.js, Kotlin, Go, or systems that integrate with hardware/IoT a bonus. - Full stack: all of the above, end to end, across web, mobile, and the services that power them.
