Travertine is an industrial transformation company developing electrochemical technology to decouple sulfur from critical mineral production, starting with phosphate. The company enables large-scale circularity in extractive industries while decarbonizing building materials by recycling sulfate wastes into sulfuric acid and valuable mineral co-products. Founded in Boulder, CO, Travertine has raised over $29M in capital including $5M+ in US Federal and State grants, and has successfully operated a demonstration plant in Rochester, NY for over 3,000 hours. The company is now developing its first commercial-scale plant—the first new phosphate plant built on US soil in over 50 years.
The Instrumentation & Controls Engineer will own end-to-end I&C systems development for Travertine's advanced electrochemical and chemical production processes. Responsibilities span from control philosophy and control narratives through instrumentation selection, electrical design, PLC programming, HMI development, commissioning, troubleshooting, and operation across the lab, pilot facility (Boulder), demonstration plant (NY), and eventual commercial-scale systems.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning I&C engineering for the Travertine process
- Coordinating with Process Development and Engineering teams to define instrumentation and control requirements
- Developing control narratives based on process engineering needs
- Specifying instrumentation (sensors, transmitters, analyzers, valves) and PLC/SCADA/networking hardware
- Establishing OT/IT interface requirements to meet cyber-security standards
- Developing PLC programs, control logic, alarms, interlocks, and HMIs
- Developing SCADA interfaces for datalogging, reporting, and distributed alarming
- Installing, troubleshooting, and adjusting industrial control systems at pilot, demo, and commercial scales
- Managing internal and external workflows for all I&C work
- Diagnosing and implementing solutions for controls and instrumentation issues in the field
- Developing and maintaining I&C documentation including I/O lists and electrical drawings
Requirements:
- 5+ years of experience as an I&C engineer
- Undergraduate degree in engineering or a related technical field
- Demonstrated ability to develop control narratives based on input from process engineers
- Demonstrated ability to develop complete industrial controls systems with a variety of PLCs and software platforms including ladder logic and function block programming
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with controls and electrical contractors
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage projects and timelines
- Experience with Ignition, Honeywell Experion DCS/SCADA, or other industrial automation platforms is a plus
