Kit is a creator-focused email marketing and commerce platform helping coaches, YouTubers, authors, podcasters, and other creatives grow audiences, automate marketing, and sell digital products. The company is 100% remote, independent, and mission-driven around helping creators earn a living.
You'll serve as Kit's senior in-house legal counsel, reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and partnering with product, sales, finance, and people operations leaders. Your core mandate is to build the legal backbone of a fast-moving tech company with multiple revenue streams (SaaS, digital commerce, paid recommendations, advertising) while reducing reliance on outside counsel.
Key responsibilities include:
**First Week:** Onboard on Kit's business model, products (Kit, SparkLoop, Subscriber Signals), and ecosystem. Meet stakeholders and external counsel. Assess current legal agreements, privacy questions, and customer security requests for risk, opportunity, and efficiency gaps.
**First Month:** Map active data processing, privacy, AI, and compliance initiatives. Design a scalable intake and guidance system for recurring privacy questions, especially around Subscriber Signals. Partner with Sales, Sponsorships, Security, Product, and Engineering. Own GDPR and data compliance vetting; establish processes for customer security questionnaires.
**First Six Months:** Become the go-to legal partner across product, engineering, security, and GTM. Build scalable systems—playbooks, templates, intake processes, self-service guidance—for privacy, data-use, and compliance questions. Embed in product lifecycle decisions. Prioritize legal risks and streamline workflows.
**First Year:** Elevate Kit's legal maturity across privacy, compliance, product counsel, commercial contracts, and security support. Establish durable systems enabling teams to answer common questions independently while escalating appropriately. Treat privacy and compliance as strategic enablers, not just compliance boxes.
**Required Skills & Experience:**
- Deep expertise in data privacy, compliance, and product law (primary focus areas)
- Strong knowledge of U.S. and European data privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA), including controller vs. processor distinctions
- Ability to translate privacy and compliance requirements into scalable playbooks, templates, and self-service guidance
- Experience supporting customer security questionnaires and partnering with security, sales, product, and engineering teams
- Familiarity with SOC 2 Type II requirements and associated legal/privacy implications
- Understanding of intellectual property law (brand, content, software)
- Understanding of commercial contracts
- Clear communicator and trusted advisor who simplifies complexity
- J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school
- Active member in good standing of a State Bar Association
- Prior experience as in-house counsel at a tech company OR serving a tech portfolio at a top-tier startup-focused firm (e.g., Fenwick & West, Cooley)
**Ideal Traits:**
- Strategic thinker who views legal as a business lever, not a blocker
- Deeply curious and business-oriented; starts with goals, then explores smart paths
- Collaborative problem-solver who navigates conflict productively
- Believes creator success is Kit's success
- "How might we" mindset; finds creative, business-aligned solutions
- Comfortable operating as sole in-house legal expert with outside counsel as needed
- Bias toward speed, ownership, and initiative
- Not risk-averse; comfortable with "yes-before-no" thinking
**Not a fit if:**
- You need a team of in-house peers or co-counsel to pressure-test decisions
- You have a strongly risk-averse or "no-before-yes" mindset
- You think in legal vacuums without factoring in business goals and customer impact
- You struggle with speed or ownership; prefer long timelines or being directed
