Fluidstack is building civilization-scale AI compute infrastructure, acquiring power, designing and operating data centers at gigawatt scale. The HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) Engineer will own safety, compliance, and worker health across a leased campus where construction, commissioning, and live operations occur simultaneously.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own HSE across a multi-phase campus (construction, commissioning, and live operation) where another operator controls the lease
- Review design and commissioning packages to identify hazards and push engineering controls into drawings before field crews encounter them
- Manage hazardous energy controls across electrical distribution systems: develop switching plans, LOTO procedures, and zero-energy verification protocols as equipment is installed, tested, and energized
- Oversee workers' compensation and case management from initial injury report through carrier and TPA handoff, treatment, and fitness-for-duty determinations; define transitional duty protocols so field crews return to modified duty within days
- Maintain current injury, illness, and environmental recordkeeping (OSHA 300, 300A, 301 logs; New York state filings; stormwater and air permit records; claims and near-miss trends) to withstand inspection and leadership review
- Operate with full autonomy, taking on scope end-to-end without permission; drive everything forward with insane urgency while reasoning from first principles
The role sits at the intersection of safety engineering, occupational health, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence in a high-intensity, fast-scaling environment where speed and scale are key differentiators.
Requirements:
- Demonstrated experience running site safety on a data center or heavy industrial build where construction crews, commissioning, and energized systems shared one campus
- Current OSHA 30 Construction certification and current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification
- Proven track record reviewing design and commissioning packages and successfully getting engineering controls incorporated into drawings (not just procedures)
- Experience managing workers' compensation claims from first report through closure, including working with adjusters, occupational physicians, and clinics to influence claim outcomes
- Built or run a return-to-work and transitional duty program that field supervisors actively used, with measurable improvement in return-to-work metrics
- Owned OSHA 300, 300A, and 301 recordkeeping through an inspection or audit where logs withstood scrutiny
- Bonus qualifications: Construction safety credentials (CHST, CSP, ASP); Professional Engineering licensure (PE); Case and disability management credentials (CCM, CPDM, occupational health RN); New York construction and labor compliance expertise (Industrial Code Rule 23, Labor Law 240 and 241); Claims and injury analytics tooling (Origami, Riskonnect, Intelex)
