The Head of Workplaces is a director-level role responsible for strategy, standards, and long-term vision for Abridge's physical workplace portfolio across four cities. This leader ensures offices support company growth, deliver exceptional employee experience, and reflect thoughtful investment in design, infrastructure, and operations.
Key responsibilities include:
**Real Estate & Facilities Strategy:** Own portfolio strategy including capacity planning, site selection, lease negotiations, renewals, and long-term capital needs. Apply deep facilities expertise to evaluate technical recommendations and infrastructure needs. Partner with the Facilities Manager on building conditions and maintenance planning. Develop investment recommendations balancing employee experience, cost, flexibility, and operational reliability.
**Workplace Design & Delivery:** Set vision and design standards for new offices, renovations, and major investments. Lead project delivery in partnership with Facilities, IT, Security, Finance, Legal, and external specialists. Ensure permitting, safety, accessibility, and operational requirements are incorporated. Manage scope, budgets, schedules, and material changes through documented approvals.
**Team Leadership & Workplace Operations:** Lead and develop the Facilities and Workplace Experience functions (currently 1 Facilities Manager, 2 Office Managers, 2 Workplace Experience Coordinators). Establish clear ownership, decision authority, and escalation paths. Empower team members to lead their respective operations. Own operating and capital budgets, vendor accountability, and service standards. Ensure clear ownership of workplace safety, emergency preparedness, and business continuity.
**Stakeholder & Executive Partnership:** Build trusted relationships with executive leadership and cross-functional partners. Serve as primary point of contact for complex or sensitive situations. Align stakeholders early on space strategy and major initiatives. Establish agreed framework with executive leadership for approving design, scope, and budget. Represent Workplaces as a strategic business function enabling company growth.
The role requires 5 days per week in-office presence in San Francisco.
**Requirements:**
- Experience leading a multi-office workplace portfolio through growth or significant change
- Strong, hands-on background in facilities, building systems, construction, and vendor management
- Experience with commercial real estate transactions and financial planning
- Record of delivering workplace projects with disciplined management of scope, budget, schedule, and operational readiness
- Strong design judgment balancing aesthetics, functionality, accessibility, maintenance, and cost
- Experience developing teams and managers who operate with clear accountability and meaningful autonomy
- Credibility with senior leaders and ability to communicate clear recommendations, navigate disagreement, and secure decisions under ambiguity
