Proxima Fusion is Europe's fastest-growing fusion company, backed by over €650M in funding and spun out from the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics. The company is developing hardware and infrastructure for the world's first commercial stellarator fusion power plant, with operations across Munich, Zurich, and Oxford. You will build and lead the team responsible for the architecture, design, and integration of facility-wide monitoring and control systems for Alpha, Proxima's net energy gain stellarator. The role involves transitioning from legacy industrial control paradigms to a fully integrated control and observability platform, drawing inspiration from cutting-edge robotics, autonomous vehicles, and modern aerospace avionics. Key responsibilities include: - Specifying mission control and supervisory software, owning the overarching supervisory control, telemetry pipelines, and live monitoring stack across Alpha and future Proxima facilities - Building the facility data center and data platform, including design, deployment, and scaling of facility compute hardware and software responsible for high-speed ingestion, streaming telemetry, storage, and live visualization - Driving functional safety strategy by defining device-wide technical strategy and collaborating with internal engineers and external regulatory stakeholders - Leading physical facility and environmental integration, partnering with facility teams to ensure physical services, cabling, and infrastructure support the I&C architecture under harsh radiation and magnetic field constraints - Driving hardware R&D by identifying opportunities for control and automation hardware and acting as an expert customer to specify and co-design with external vendors - Standardizing clean interface boundaries across subsystems by establishing hardware and software interface standards and collaborating closely with system teams You will work on some of the most complex technology challenges to bring abundant, safe, and clean energy to the world, alongside an exceptional team of accomplished and driven individuals. REQUIREMENTS: - Proven experience as a delivery or execution lead, with demonstrated ability to select outstanding talent and build highly collaborative teams in fast-moving environments; excellence at translating complex R&D into operational reality - Strong background working with safety and mission-critical software, combined with a vision to incorporate modern software and AI into operational infrastructure - Proven experience in high-performance sectors operating under strict performance and reliability constraints, with demonstrated track record in critical external customer, vendor, and stakeholder management - Hands-on operational skills in mission control and real-time data analysis, combined with experience integrating software with physical hardware
