TypeSafe AI is building machine-native intelligence infrastructure for automation, combining LLMs with code-based efficiency into System One Models. The company recently launched its first public model, Jev, which has achieved rapid adoption across approximately one-third of the Fortune 500. The team includes veterans from OpenAI, Google Brain, and Meta/FAIR, backed by top-tier investors including Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia.
You will be TypeSafe's first legal hire, building and leading the legal function as the company scales. Working directly with founders and cross-functionally with engineering, product, and go-to-market teams, you will help launch products, manage customer and partner relationships, and guide thoughtful risk decisions.
Key responsibilities include: leading customer and partner negotiations (enterprise agreements, API distribution, reseller arrangements, data processing agreements, vendor contracts); building contract templates and negotiation playbooks; providing product and privacy counseling to technical teams on data use, retention, international processing, and security commitments; monitoring AI and regulatory developments to identify impacts on products and business; establishing contract intake, approval, signing, and management processes with self-service capabilities; owning employment, corporate, governance, and IP matters; selecting and managing outside counsel; and serving as a business partner across the company to resolve difficult questions.
This is a hands-on role requiring substantial judgment and ownership. You should be comfortable negotiating customer agreements, working through data-handling questions with engineers, and deciding which legal processes to build. The ideal candidate combines legal expertise with pragmatism, makes clear recommendations, and helps teams move forward quickly.
The company works fully in person from the San Francisco office near Embarcadero station, with close collaboration among the team building the technology and shaping the business.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 10–15 years of relevant legal experience, including meaningful in-house experience at a growing technology company
- Strong legal training, ideally including experience at a leading law firm, with a track record of applying it effectively inside a business
- Substantial commercial contracting experience and ability to counsel independently on product and privacy matters with good judgment about expertise limits
- Experience helping a company scale its legal operations and building processes appropriate to company stage
- Curiosity about AI and willingness to learn how the technology works, how customers use it, and where legal questions arise
- Ability to make practical decisions under uncertainty, distinguish material risks from manageable ones, and consider operational and commercial solutions alongside contractual protections
- Comfort doing the work themselves, responding quickly, and following through in a fast-moving environment
- Clear communication and ability to build productive relationships with technical teams, customers, executives, investors, and outside counsel
- Skill in prioritizing limited resources and explaining what to build, buy, delegate, or defer
- Admission to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction and eligibility to practice as in-house counsel in California
