Kit is a creator-focused email marketing and commerce platform on a mission to help creators earn $1 billion. The company is 100% remote, independent, and growing rapidly across multiple revenue streams including SaaS, digital commerce, paid recommendations, and advertising. You will serve as Kit's Senior Legal Counsel, reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and partnering closely with product, sales, finance, and people operations leaders. You'll be the in-house legal subject matter expert and sole legal counsel, responsible for navigating privacy, data, AI, compliance, commercial contracts, and customer security requirements. Key responsibilities include: **First Week:** Onboard on Kit's business model, products (Kit, SparkLoop, Subscriber Signals), and ecosystem. Meet stakeholders and external counsel. Assess current legal agreements, privacy questions, and customer security requests to identify risks, opportunities, and inefficiencies. **First Month:** Understand active data processing, privacy, and AI initiatives. Design a scalable intake and guidance system for recurring privacy support questions, particularly around Subscriber Signals. Partner with Sales, Sponsorships, Security, Product, and Engineering. Own GDPR and data compliance vetting; establish processes for customer security questionnaires. **First Six Months:** Become the go-to legal partner across product, engineering, security, and GTM teams. Build scalable systems—playbooks, templates, intake processes, self-service guidance—for recurring privacy, data-use, and compliance questions. Partner throughout the product lifecycle with focus on Subscriber Signals. Prioritize legal risks and reduce reliance on outside counsel. **First Year:** Elevate Kit's legal maturity across privacy, compliance, product counsel, commercial contracts, and security support. Establish durable systems enabling teams to answer common questions independently while escalating appropriately. Treat privacy, data, and compliance as strategic enablers. Significantly reduce outside counsel reliance. You'll work in a fast-moving environment where legal strategy intersects with product, business, and creator success. The role emphasizes practical problem-solving, scalability, and business-aligned advice rather than risk-aversion. **Requirements:** - Deep expertise in data, compliance, and product law - Strong knowledge of U.S. and European data privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA), including controller vs. processor distinctions - Ability to translate privacy and compliance requirements into scalable playbooks, templates, and self-service guidance - Experience supporting customer security questionnaires and partnering with security, sales, product, and engineering teams - Familiarity with SOC 2 Type II and associated legal, privacy, and customer requirements - Understanding of intellectual property law (brand, content, software) - Understanding of commercial contracts - Strong communication and trusted advisor skills; ability to simplify complexity - Experience as in-house counsel at a tech company OR serving a tech portfolio at a top-tier startup-focused firm (e.g., Fenwick & West, Cooley) - J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school - Active membership in good standing with a State Bar Association - Strategic mindset; sees legal as a lever, not a blocker - Deeply curious and business-oriented - Collaborative problem-solver; comfortable with creative, business-aligned solutions - Belief in creator success as core mission - Comfort with speed, ownership, and initiative in a fast-moving environment Not a fit if you need in-house peers for pressure-testing, prefer risk-averse approaches, think in legal vacuums disconnected from business goals, or struggle with speed and ownership.
