Moss is a Finance AI platform for Europe's mid-sized businesses, automating card issuing, invoice management, and expenses for finance teams. The company recently closed a €35 million Series C in August 2026, achieving a €1 billion valuation and becoming one of Europe's newest fintech unicorns. With 300+ employees across 5 European offices and 10,000+ business customers, Moss is scaling rapidly. You will lead engineering for one of Moss's product tribes, managing 15–20 engineers directly. This is a people leadership role with a hard technical requirement. You report to the CTO and sit in a tribe leadership trio alongside the Product Tribe Lead and Design Lead. The engineers report to you; tech leads in each squad own technical direction but have no management layer between them and you. Key responsibilities include: - Hiring, onboarding, performance management, feedback, development, compensation, and promotion decisions for 15–20 direct reports - Accountability for tribe-wide delivery outcomes, velocity, and quality - Technical judgment across squads: challenging estimates, reviewing architecture proposals, and ensuring feasibility - Roadmap and planning input through a technical feasibility lens; arguing solutions and trade-offs with product leadership - Defining and operating the tribe's planning, estimation, tracking, and reporting rhythm - Capacity allocation: placing engineers on high-impact work and moving talent between squads and tribes while building domain depth - Cross-tribe alignment on shared architecture and technical decisions Moss operates in flat, tribe/squad-style organizational structure. Squads are assigned to problem spaces and led by a trio of Tech Lead, Product Manager, and Product Designer. Tech Leads own technical decisions and write code alongside engineers but do not manage people. Discovery and delivery run in parallel, with the next mission scoped before engineers finish the current one. Leadership expectations: velocity first with high agency; lead by example and stay close to the work; own outcomes end-to-end; collaborate across functions from the start; disagree and commit; and ground decisions in real expertise, not assumptions. Moss offers top-of-market compensation including equity, vibrant in-person offices with weekly breakfasts and Friday demos, 20 days "work from abroad," and a €600 Learning & Development budget. REQUIREMENTS: - 4–6+ years in engineering management with a track record of managing engineers directly at meaningful span; you've run hiring, performance management, and difficult conversations yourself - Senior or staff-level engineering career before management; current judgment on system design, not historical - Strong systems design: ability to read architecture, spot breaking points, argue alternatives, and distinguish 2-week from 6-week estimates - Comfort as a technical peer to product leadership; experience shaping roadmaps and scope through feasibility arguments - Ability to structure and manage 15–20 direct reports without a middle management layer; clear expectations, regular feedback, visible delivery - Speed in unfamiliar domains; ability to reason about new technical areas quickly - Experience in environments with mature engineering practices: code review, testing, incident handling, planning, and estimation STRONG PLUSES: - Background at an AI product company or in ERP/financial systems - Experience leading in flat or tribe/squad-style organizations - Experience with Tech Lead/Engineering Manager split
