Salary: USD 187,000 - 300,000 / annual
ClassDojo is seeking an experienced, entrepreneurial Head of Accounting (Controller) to oversee and scale all aspects of the company's accounting and tax operations and strategy, with potential to own additional areas such as procurement.

In this role, you will:
- Build and scale financial systems, processes, and policies to support the company's financial health and efficient scaling
- Oversee the monthly close process, annual audits, financial reporting, and control processes to generate confidence in financial reports internally and externally (Board, third-party partners, regulators, prospective investors)
- Oversee the in-house accounting team and external consultants managing GL, AP, technical/revenue accounting, financial reporting, payroll, equity, tax, and treasury
- Partner with stakeholders across business units and functional leaders (Strategic Finance, People, Engineering, Legal, etc.)
- Support the CFO and executives on strategic initiatives including M&A, fundraising, secondary transactions, and potential future IPO
- Report directly to the CFO
You will work in a high-talent, distributed team of ~200 people comprising alumni from Instagram, Netflix, Dropbox, Stripe, Uber, Y Combinator, and similar organizations.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 12+ years of experience: 3+ years at a top-tier audit firm and 8+ years in-house accounting at fast-growing startups with increasing responsibility culminating in controller or assistant controller role
- Built and retained accounting teams of meaningful scale and complexity (managers and individual contributors)
- Designed and managed full-cycle accounting close and operations, including tax, treasury, payroll, and equity administration
- Led accounting teams through multiple clean audits with Big Four firms
- Applied US GAAP knowledge to complex business transactions, documented conclusions, established processes, and defended positions to external auditors
- Proven track record scaling finance operations through process/systems overhauls, including AI-powered workflows
- Overseen global indirect tax compliance (US sales tax, international VAT/GST)
- Leadership: proven record of finding, nurturing high-potential talent, instilling integrity and ownership
- Cross-functional effectiveness: ability to implement financial systems and processes with meaningful impact
- Technical accounting acumen: subject matter expertise in ASC 606, ASC 718, ASC 805, ASC 350; ability to independently identify complex issues early
- Strategic mindset: curiosity about products and business strategy, ability to articulate accounting decisions to external and internal leaders
- Scrappiness: prioritization discipline, quality focus, growth mindset, willingness to own additional responsibilities
BONUS:
- Lead-level accounting role at a public tech company
- Experience with emerging AI-native finance tooling (e.g., Rillet)
- Experience with complex businesses (multiple products, different revenue models)
- Business combination accounting and integration experience
- Active CPA license
