Anthropic is seeking a Hardware Lab Manager to establish and operate its Bay Area hardware labs. As the first dedicated lab manager, you will own all aspects of the physical lab environment, from receiving and staging hardware through final deployment.
Key responsibilities include:
• Physical lab operations: receiving, staging, rack-and-stack, cabling, power distribution, cooling, and floor layout across multiple sites
• Hardware bring-up: firmware/BIOS configuration, out-of-band management, OS installation, and network provisioning for servers and accelerators
• Procurement and inventory: coordinate with teams on hardware needs, manage orders, track lead times, and maintain receiving/inventory systems
• RMA management: triage, swap, ship, and track hardware returns; drive vendor escalations
• Custom setups: build debug harnesses (JTAG/SWD/UART), remote power switching, console/KVM access, and specialized configurations
• Contractor oversight: scope, dispatch, and validate work from electricians, cabling crews, riggers, and OEM field engineers
• Asset management: physical access control, auditing, and lifecycle tracking for expensive and pre-release hardware
• Documentation: develop playbooks and lightweight tooling (inventory systems, remote power, console access) to enable remote teams
Required qualifications:
• Hands-on experience running hardware, systems, or datacenter labs
• Knowledge of server hardware management (BMC/IPMI/Redfish, BIOS/UEFI, serial console, PXE, firmware)
• Linux and networking skills (VLANs, DHCP, DNS, basic switch configuration)
• Vendor and contractor management experience
• Proficiency with power tools, bench equipment, and technical diagrams
• Independent work style with strong communication and risk flagging
• Bias toward action and comfort with ambiguity
Desirable experience includes lab/datacenter setup from scratch, high-density accelerator systems, liquid cooling, pre-release hardware bring-up, electronics bench skills (soldering, oscilloscope, custom cables), hardware security/firmware support, DCIM tools, and specialty hardware sourcing.
