Campfire is an AI-native ERP for financial operations. Accounting teams and fractional CFO firms at fast-growing companies use it to run their close, revenue recognition, AP/AR, consolidations and reporting. Ember, the AI layer, works alongside accountants on the ledger itself.
You will be the engineer responsible for taking the CEO's code contributions to production. The CEO ships code using AI coding tools, turning customer conversations into working prototypes and opening PRs directly against the codebase. Your role is to bridge the gap between the CEO's editor and main branch, ensuring ideas reach production safely and correctly.
Key responsibilities include:
- Triaging every CEO PR by reading diffs and determining intent, then deciding whether to ship with fixes, rebuild properly, split into smaller PRs, or push back.
- Making code production-grade by adding types, tests, error handling, fixing performance issues (N+1 queries), ensuring adherence to existing patterns, and generating safe migrations.
- Protecting the ledger by ensuring nothing posts into closed periods, all model attributes exist, approval and audit flows are respected, integrations use sandbox endpoints, and accounting correctness is maintained.
- Keeping AI features honest by implementing token tracking and spend-limit enforcement for all LLM calls.
- Guarding reliability through proper error routing, Sentry conventions, single-failure reporting, and surfacing customer-fixable problems appropriately.
- Closing the loop by identifying root causes when the CEO makes repeated mistakes and implementing fixes through better scaffolding, clearer conventions, or improved tooling.
- Saying no well when necessary, explaining clearly and offering better paths to customer outcomes.
This is a real engineering role with an unusual input stream. You'll work closer to the CEO and customer priorities than anyone else on the team, turning customer demos that half-work into features that are correct on a real general ledger with real money in it.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 4+ years of shipping production Python (Django, Postgres, and Celery strongly preferred; TypeScript/React a plus)
- Excellent code review instincts; ability to quickly identify critical issues in large diffs
- Strong judgment about when to patch, rewrite, or delete code
- Low ego and high candor; comfort pushing back on leadership
- Ability to reconstruct intent from incomplete specifications
- Speed and efficiency in processing a high volume of PRs
NICE TO HAVE:
- Accounting fluency (double-entry bookkeeping, accruals, ASC 606, month-end close)
- Deep experience with AI coding tools and their failure modes
- Experience with financial integrations (Plaid, Ramp, Brex, Stripe, payroll providers)
- Early-stage startup experience
