Ascent Developer Solutions is a leading private lending platform serving real estate developers nationwide. This Forward Deployed Engineer II role is a hybrid position (Monday–Thursday on-site in Encino, Fridays remote) focused on building AI-powered automation tools for complex real estate lending workflows.
You will embed with business teams to deeply understand their workflows—systems, documents, decisions, and handoffs—then design and ship production automations that scale their expertise. This is a full engineering role: you'll write production code in Python or TypeScript, take it through security review, and support it post-launch. You report directly to the Head of Technology, and your scope grows with each project delivered.
Key responsibilities include:
- Embedding with business teams to learn workflows end-to-end (inputs, systems, decision rules, handoffs, exceptions)
- Mapping workflows and keeping those maps current as the source of truth
- Identifying and sizing automation opportunities by hours saved, error reduction, and risk
- Writing build-ready specifications for Platform Engineering (data requirements, business rules, edge cases, acceptance criteria)
- Building and shipping production automations using Python or TypeScript, APIs, and LLM-based agents
- Designing agent workflows as engineered loops with clear goals, right tools, verification, stop conditions, and human checkpoints
- Taking every automation through security and AI governance gates (sandboxed development, least-privilege identities, audit logging, human review of loan-decision outputs, independent security review)
- Measuring each automation against pre-launch baselines and reporting results
- Driving adoption through user training, procedure updates, and post-launch issue resolution
- Monitoring and supporting shipped automations with runbooks for exception handling
- Partnering with Data & Analytics on data definitions, quality issues, and metrics
- Following engineering standards (version control, code review, automated testing, change management)
- Protecting borrower data per GLBA, company security policies, and AI Use Policy
- Evaluating AI tools and vendors; recommending build vs. buy
- Rotating to new departments once current automations are stable and documented
- Providing clear, regular updates on progress, blockers, and results
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 3–5 years of professional software engineering experience, including systems relied on daily by non-technical business users
- Production experience with Python or TypeScript, SQL, and REST API integrations
- Hands-on experience shipping LLM-based features to production (tool use, structured outputs, document extraction, retrieval, evaluation); agent framework experience a plus
- Daily use of AI coding tools with discipline to review and test output
- Experience with loop engineering—designing agent loops that act, check results against clear goals, and stop or hand off to a person at the right point
- Proven ability to run discovery with business users and turn it into clear process maps and specifications; consulting, solutions engineering, internal tools, or business systems experience strongly preferred
- Systems thinker who designs for the whole process, not just the immediate task
- Sound security habits (least-privilege access, secrets management, logging, safe handling of sensitive personal and financial data)
- Experience in lending, real estate finance, or regulated financial services environment a plus
- Experience with OutSystems or other low-code platforms, Microsoft 365/SharePoint, and Jira a plus
- Clear writer and communicator who can explain technical tradeoffs to business partners and executives
- High ownership and comfort starting from incomplete problem statements
