Salary: USD 185,000 - 210,000 / annual

Mill is a waste prevention technology company building smart systems and infrastructure for homes, businesses, and municipalities that transform food scraps into valuable resources. The company operates residential food recyclers that help households divert millions of pounds of food waste annually, and is launching Mill Commercial—an end-to-end solution for managing and preventing food waste in commercial environments like grocery stores, restaurants, and food services. As a Firmware Engineer, you'll work with a small dynamic team on novel hardware products. Your responsibilities include: • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on embedded software and hardware validation for new products • Write, test, and review embedded code to control systems and explore new control methodologies • Provide hands-on debugging support during system commissioning and testing, working with electrical engineers and product designers to troubleshoot and optimize system-level performance • Implement prototype drivers and conduct testing on hardware systems This is a hands-on role spanning development, testing, and debug work as the team pushes toward product launch. You'll work directly with hardware components and lab equipment alongside production code. REQUIREMENTS: Minimum Qualifications: • BS, MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering • 1–3 years of professional experience in embedded software development • Ability to work 3–5 days per week in-office at the San Bruno location • Experience writing, testing, and debugging embedded C to control electromechanical components and read sensors • Strong analytical and communication skills Preferred Qualifications: • Experience with embedded Linux systems (Yocto preferred) • Experience debugging physical hardware using oscilloscopes, network/logic analyzers • Past experience developing for load cells, DC motors, PID controllers, DC fans • Experience with Python scripting • Experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop testing platforms • Experience with CI/CD pipelines for production code
