Salary: USD 182,000 - 281,000 / annual

Okta is seeking an Engineering Manager for the Governance Intelligence team within Okta Identity Governance (OIG). OIG is Okta's Identity Governance and Administration solution, responsible for critical enterprise workflows including access requests, approvals, entitlement enforcement, and compliance auditing. OIG is the leading contributor to Okta's new product bookings and runs inside some of the largest enterprises globally, managing hundreds of thousands of identities across thousands of applications. In this role, you will lead and grow a team of ML experts and engineers to deliver Intelligence features for OIG powered by machine learning, large language models, and agentic AI systems. Your mission is to adapt the OIG product to meet the needs of government customers while maintaining the highest security and compliance standards. Key responsibilities include: - Lead and grow a team of ML experts and other engineers to deliver key Intelligence features powered by AI/ML and agentic systems - Establish rigor around AI evaluation: design evaluation frameworks, measure factuality and relevance, and set quality gates before production rollout - Own the end-to-end AI product lifecycle from problem framing and data curation through model training, A/B testing, deployment, and continuous improvement - Architect, deploy, and maintain cloud and on-premises infrastructure across high-compliance security baselines - Support operations transitioning into federal environments and collaborate with other engineering teams to ensure deployments meet stringent governmental security standards - Proactively identify and prioritize tech debt; drive improvements in CI/CD, observability, documentation, reliability, and support processes - Partner with Product and Design to understand and own desired customer outcomes - Actively invest in the growth of reporting engineers and raise the technical bar of the team You will actively design, build, and maintain both robust backend services and intuitive frontend interfaces. This role requires deep expertise in distributed systems and a commitment to AI-native engineering as the standard. You will rethink backend design, validation, and delivery through AI-augmented workflows, ensuring the platform provides secure, interoperable, and scalable access enforcing the principle of least privilege. REQUIREMENTS: - 10+ years in software engineering, including 3+ years in a management role, shipping enterprise cloud software - Hands-on depth in coding at scale using Java, Python, or TypeScript, plus API (REST, gRPC) and UI automation (Playwright, Selenium, or equivalent) - Experience with CI/CD (CircleCI or equivalent), containers (Docker, Kubernetes), and a major cloud platform - Operates well beyond basic AI tool usage—understands how to apply AI meaningfully across the full software development lifecycle, can evaluate and adopt new AI tooling with good judgment, and can establish practices and bring a team along - Proven experience defining scalable backend architectures and integrating complex APIs with modern web technologies, including the ability to make and defend architectural decisions with lasting org-wide impact - Solid understanding of web authentication and authorization fundamentals—how auth flows work and best practices for securing sensitive user data - Deep expertise in building reliable, secure, enterprise-grade software in Java or another type-safe language - High proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript with true fullstack range, including the ability to ship robust frontends EXTRA CREDIT: - AI Infrastructure Expertise: hands-on experience building, scaling, and troubleshooting AWS/GCP based AI infrastructure - Identity Governance and Administration (IGA) experience—access requests, certifications, entitlement management, separation of duties, or role modeling (Okta, SailPoint, Saviynt, One Identity, Oracle, or in-house) - Identity and Access Management more broadly: SSO, SCIM provisioning, directory integration, or privileged access ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: - U.S. soil status: must be on U.S. soil (50 states, District of Columbia, or outlying areas as defined in FAR 2.101) and be a U.S. person - U.S. person status: must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, protected individual, or U.S. national (includes citizens and non-citizens born in outlying possessions such as American Samoa and Swains Island), green card holders, refugees, and asylees.
