OpenAI's Industrial Compute organization is building large-scale data center infrastructure to support next-generation AI at unprecedented scale. This role establishes and drives environmental, health, and safety (EHS) strategy across OpenAI's rapidly expanding compute infrastructure portfolio.
The EHS Lead will develop comprehensive EHS frameworks for large-scale data center development and operations, partnering with engineering, construction, infrastructure delivery, facilities, operations, security, legal, and external partners. The role embeds safety and environmental considerations from early design through site development, construction, commissioning, and ongoing operations.
Key responsibilities include: developing EHS strategy, standards, and operating mechanisms across the data center portfolio; establishing scalable EHS requirements for site development, design, construction, and operations; partnering with engineering teams to identify and mitigate risks; developing risk assessment frameworks for high-hazard activities (electrical systems, high-voltage infrastructure, construction, confined spaces, hazardous materials); establishing EHS requirements for external partners including contractors and vendors; building performance measurement mechanisms with leading/lagging indicators, audits, and incident reporting; leading investigations of significant incidents and near misses; developing emergency preparedness frameworks; providing technical guidance during construction and commissioning; integrating environmental compliance into infrastructure development; establishing governance processes for geographically distributed portfolios; monitoring regulatory developments; supporting permitting and compliance activities; developing training and accountability programs; serving as senior EHS advisor to infrastructure leadership; and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement through engineering and design standards.
Ideal candidates have deep experience leading EHS programs for hyperscale data centers, mission-critical infrastructure, large industrial facilities, semiconductor manufacturing, or advanced manufacturing environments. Strong technical understanding of construction and operational safety, electrical safety, high-voltage systems, industrial equipment, and fire/life safety is essential. Experience developing scalable EHS standards across distributed portfolios, managing third-party EHS performance, understanding U.S. federal/state/local regulations, conducting incident investigations and root-cause analysis, and building EHS metrics and reporting systems is required.
