Mistral is building a sovereign AI cloud for Europe, providing full-stack AI solutions from frontier models to developer tools and compute infrastructure. The Cloud Platform team builds the systems enabling customers in finance, healthcare, and the public sector to run frontier models on European-jurisdiction infrastructure. This is a people-leadership role managing the Sandbox team, which builds the isolation layer for AI agents and reinforcement-learning workloads. You will spend roughly half your time on architecture decisions and the hardest technical problems, and half your time leading your squad through hiring, coaching, performance management, and growth paths. The Sandbox team builds secure, isolated, network-controlled environments with snapshotting primitives designed for AI agents. The core tension is delivering airtight isolation at fleet scale with low latency. RL training runs need thousands of environments created and destroyed every second; agents need to feel fast while remaining sandboxed from the world. Your customers are engineers building the next generation of AI software on Mistral's infrastructure. Key responsibilities: - Build the isolation layer using microVMs or containers, namespaces, cgroups, seccomp, snapshot and restore mechanisms - Own the security boundary, ensuring customers can safely run code they didn't write - Scale to fleets: optimize creation latency, density, and lifecycle management for thousands of concurrent environments - Write Go alongside your team and own architecture and implementation decisions - Grow engineers by setting ownership standards and coaching them past their comfort zone - Own people management: hiring, performance reviews, growth paths, and honest feedback - Partner with Product Managers to translate frontier research needs into shippable primitives Mistral operates distributed teams across Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East, running infrastructure on their own metal, datacenters, and network. The company is scaling toward a gigawatt of compute across Europe by 2030. REQUIREMENTS: - 2+ years of real people leadership: you have managed engineers, hired, coached, given honest feedback, and grown them - Deep Linux internals expertise: namespaces, cgroups, seccomp, virtualization (ideally microVMs like Firecracker) - Shipped production systems in Go (not dabbled—shipped) - Understanding of network isolation at the packet level, not just firewall rules - Performance instincts: knowledge of syscall costs and demonstrated profiling experience - 8+ years building backend or infrastructure systems - Experience partnering with product, design, and business teams to ship software to real users - Low-ego, team-first mindset; technical force that other engineers want to work alongside
