Relay is a digital banking platform serving self-made business owners with financial clarity and cash flow visibility. The Voyager team is Relay's applied AI and innovation center, building shared infrastructure for AI-powered features and exploring emerging technologies before company-wide adoption.
In this Engineering Manager role, you will lead a senior-heavy engineering team and own multiple strategic areas:
AI Infrastructure: You'll be accountable for the reliability, security, and lifecycle of Voyager's shared LLM systems, from design through deployment and monitoring.
R&D and Proof-of-Concepts: Lead exploratory initiatives that evaluate and validate emerging technologies, producing clear recommendations on adoption.
Developer Enablement: Provide teams across Relay with tooling, patterns, and guidance to ship AI workflows quickly and safely.
Delivery Leadership: Plan and deliver Voyager's platform and R&D initiatives, ensuring work meets quality standards, timelines, and business goals. Drive clarity in priorities and execution.
Team Operations: Establish and refine engineering processes (sprint planning, code reviews, technical design reviews) adapted for a team balancing prototypes and production systems.
People Management: Build and grow a high-performing, senior-heavy team through hiring, onboarding, coaching, and performance management. Create clear growth paths for senior and staff-level engineers.
You'll work with a tech stack including React, TypeScript, React Native, Node.js, Terraform, AWS services (DynamoDB, RDS Postgres, Lambda, S3, SQS, SNS, SES, ElasticSearch, ECS), Cursor, Claude, GitHub, Datadog, Jira, and Metabase.
The interview process includes four stages: initial talent team call (45 min), engineering leaders discussion (60 min), take-home case study plus team interview (60 min), and in-person leadership interview (45 min).
REQUIREMENTS:
- Proven experience managing senior-heavy teams, including senior and staff-level engineers, with ability to lead through influence and foster ownership of big problems
- Hands-on experience building agentic systems that run in production (not just prototypes), with understanding of reliability, observability, and safety at scale
- Strong technical foundation and proven track record shipping high-quality products; technical enough to review designs, challenge architecture, and earn credibility with senior engineers
- Demonstrated ability to run teams balancing exploration and production work, with good judgment about when rough spikes are appropriate versus when to build for durability
- Strong judgment about emerging technology; ability to distinguish useful innovations from hype and communicate those decisions clearly to leadership
- Passion for building and scaling engineering teams with deep investment in growing people
- Thrives in cross-functional environments, connecting dots and driving initiatives with meaningful impact
