Checkr is a data platform powering safe and fair decisions through AI-assisted verification. The company serves over 140,000 customers including Uber, Airbnb, DoorDash, and Anthropic, and is recognized on the Forbes Cloud 100 2025 list and as a Y Combinator 2024 Breakthrough Company.
As Engineering Manager for Verifications, you will lead a team responsible for one of Checkr's most expansive product portfolios, including employment and education verifications, drug and occupational health screenings, reference checks, and right-to-work products. The Verifications team drives growth and customer retention across enterprise customers operating in widely different roles, industries, and regulatory environments.
You will own a broad surface area with meaningful opportunity to improve accuracy and turnaround time, reduce manual touchpoints, and scale delivery across complex fulfillment integrations and compliance requirements. The role balances near-term work on scaling data quality and automation systems to handle rapid growth with strategic, longer-horizon investments in expanding coverage and building a faster, more consistent verification experience.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and growing the Verifications engineering team, setting technical direction, driving performance and career development, and building a hiring pipeline
- Owning reliability and quality of a broad portfolio of fulfillment integrations, partnering with vendors and internal stakeholders to reduce friction and improve turnaround times
- Partnering with Product to define and execute the roadmap across employment, education, drug/health, and compliance products
- Driving technical strategy for scaling a complex, integration-heavy system with deliberate architecture decisions
- Leading the team's adoption of AI-assisted development practices while maintaining quality and accuracy standards
- Representing Verifications in cross-functional planning with Product, Compliance, and Engineering leadership
The role is based in Denver, CO or San Francisco, CA, with an expectation to work from the office 3+ days per week. Checkr offers in-office perks including lunch five times weekly, commuter stipend, and relocation assistance for those willing to relocate to a hub location.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 4+ years as an engineering manager with a track record of building and developing high-performing teams
- 8+ years as a software engineer with strong command of service architecture, distributed systems, and system design
- Experience managing complex third-party integration environments and owning reliability across systems you don't fully control
- Track record of improving operational metrics (reducing incident frequency, improving detection time, shipping reliability improvements in high-stakes production environments)
- Familiarity with AI-assisted development and agentic coding tools; ability to help teams adopt these responsibly
- Experience working on regulated products where data accuracy and legal compliance are non-negotiable
- Strong incident management skills for both technical response and stakeholder communication
- Ability to make prioritization decisions quickly with a clear framework for balancing short-term reliability against longer-term product investments
- Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders (Product, Operations, Compliance, senior leadership)
- Genuine investment in developing people through career conversations, stretch assignments, and creating conditions for growth
- Humility, openness to feedback, and eagerness to learn
- A-player mindset with strong bias for action, raising the bar, moving with urgency, staying resilient through ambiguity, and taking ownership
