Vapi is a voice AI platform powering 1 billion calls for companies like Amazon Ring, Intuit, and ServiceTitan. The company is Series A-backed by Peak XV, Bessemer, Kleiner Perkins, and Y Combinator, with $72M raised. You will lead a team of four engineers responsible for billing, fraud prevention, and outbound telephony systems—critical infrastructure protecting Vapi's revenue and customer trust. Billing, pricing, and packaging represent the largest portion of the work. You'll partner closely with the PM for Enterprise & Governance to translate product priorities into reliable engineering delivery. Your role is approximately 60–70% people leadership and 20–30% hands-on technical work. You'll strengthen team operating rhythms, coach engineers on career development and promotion readiness, own service reliability and on-call practices, and lead incident response. You'll also guide architecture decisions and code reviews, earning the team's trust through technical depth. In your first 30 days, you'll learn the billing, fraud, and outbound telephony systems, meet each engineer and product partners, and assess current architecture, service ownership, on-call coverage, and team development gaps. By 60 days, you'll strengthen planning and delivery practices, define clear service ownership, improve on-call and incident response, and set growth goals with each engineer. By 90 days, you'll own engineering delivery against a shared roadmap, use reliability data to prioritize improvements, build development plans for the team, and identify hiring and system investments needed to scale. Vapi's culture emphasizes craft, commitment, urgency, direct customer input, shared ownership, and kind feedback. The company operates with an ownership mindset—many founders are on the team—and values generational impact in building the human interface for business. REQUIREMENTS: - Demonstrated engineering management experience: coaching, performance management, leveling, and career development. Must assess promotion readiness, handle difficult people situations, motivate engineers, and hold teams accountable. - Experience designing scalable, reliable enterprise systems and leading engineers through complex technical problems. Billing systems experience is a strong plus; AI expertise is not required. - Strong hands-on coding, architecture, and system design skills. Must bring informed opinions to code review, evaluate tradeoffs, and earn team trust through technical depth. - Experience owning reliable services and improving on-call and incident response practices. - Experience partnering with product managers, with clear judgment about Product and Engineering responsibilities. Must translate product requirements into technical plans and work through disagreements constructively. - Plus: experience in trust and safety, fraud/risk, voice/telephony, outbound-call compliance, or scaling newly formed teams.
