Salary: USD 210,000 - 245,000 / annual
Manifold is an AI platform for life sciences that accelerates the development and deployment of life-changing medicines. The company serves global research institutions and clinical organizations, backed by leading investors including Reach Capital, TQ Ventures, and Calibrate Ventures.
You will lead the Terra Platform team, which operates an open-source, cloud-native platform for biomedical research originally built at the Broad Institute. Terra supports 65,000 registered users across 50 countries, securely hosts 80+ petabytes of NIH data, and underpins some of the highest-impact science globally.
As Engineering Manager, you will own operational excellence for this critical platform while delivering against a targeted feature roadmap. Key responsibilities include:
• Service observability, monitoring, on-call support, dependency upgrades, and compliance audits
• Partnering with Product Management to define and deliver a prioritized roadmap, balancing stakeholder needs with operational debt paydown
• Collaborating with principal engineers on technical solutions, architectural choices, design/code reviews, and individual code contributions
• Managing a full-stack engineering team (including contractors) through 1:1s, performance development, gap identification, and hiring
• Communicating Terra's role and contribution to Manifold's business strategy, including commitments to the Broad Institute and NIH-funded community
• Evolving team processes, tools, and libraries with an AI-native mindset
This is a player-coach role where you will split time between team management and hands-on coding. Terra is central to Manifold's partnership with the Broad Institute and directly impacts the speed at which life-changing medicines reach patients.
REQUIREMENTS:
• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years of management experience
• Experience managing contractors or offshore resources
• Hands-on proficiency in Scala, Java, and SQL
• Track record of building healthy, high-performing teams
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain technical risk to non-technical stakeholders and product context to engineers
• Experience integrating AI tools into engineering workflows with concrete examples of impact
• Demonstrated understanding of life sciences research acceleration and articulated commitment to the mission
PLUS (strong preferred):
• Experience in life sciences industry, open-source communities, or regulated environments
• Infrastructure layer experience (GCP, Terraform, etc.)
