Anthropic is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Finance Engineering team, responsible for building and operating the financial platform that ensures every dollar earned and spent reaches the books correctly with audit-grade controls.
The role involves leading a team of engineers to build and maintain a mission-critical platform consisting of: a single entry point for all finance events, an append-only ledger, and an accounting engine that posts each event exactly once. The platform serves both human users and Claude agents through the same APIs and controls.
Key responsibilities include:
- Hiring, coaching, and maintaining high engineering standards for the team
- Owning delivery of the finance event ingestion system and its governed contracts
- Ensuring the accounting ledger and engine operate with perfect accuracy and traceability
- Managing production services called by other engineering teams in real time (e.g., tax and collections services in billing flows)
- Providing platform support for finance applications and agents, including SDKs, frameworks, scoped access, SOX guardrails, and observability
- Defining and enforcing reliability and correctness standards through SLOs, comprehensive testing, and daily accuracy checks
- Collaborating with engineering leaders in Billing, Compute, and Infrastructure on technical design, data contracts, and APIs
- Reducing the time required for finance to support new products, programs, and compute buildouts
You will partner closely with engineering teams across Billing, Compute, and Infrastructure, as well as product owners and finance operations. No finance background is required; the company will teach domain knowledge to candidates with strong backend systems experience.
Requirements:
- Proven experience leading teams that build and run high-volume backend systems where correctness is critical (ledgers, billing, payments, metering, or systems of record)
- Deep knowledge of event-driven systems with idempotent processing, replay, backfill, and production correctness
- Sound judgment on platform boundaries, data contracts, and API design
- Track record of hiring and growing engineers while setting platform engineering standards
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills; ability to explain technical trade-offs clearly to non-engineering partners (finance, auditors) both in writing and verbally
Preferred qualifications:
- 3+ years of engineering management experience with 8+ years total industry experience
- Experience building developer platforms or paved paths for other teams
- Proficiency with Go and streaming systems (Pub/Sub, Kafka)
- Experience building with LLMs and agents, including MCP
- Ledger or sub-ledger implementation experience with double-entry accounting knowledge
- Experience managing teams through audit and compliance work (SOX change management, segregation of duties, audit trails)
- Familiarity with ERP or financial systems (Workday Financials, Oracle Financials)
