Hiya is a B2B SaaS company focused on making business calls more trusted, useful, and effective. The company provides solutions for branded business calling, trusted caller identity, call performance insights, customer engagement, and voice security capabilities.
You will lead Hiya's Protect team's Budapest-based engineering group, managing approximately six engineers who build distributed cloud and data infrastructure systems that detect spam and fraud calls for carriers and customers worldwide. The team owns critical systems that ingest signals, run model predictions, and power detection quality at scale.
This role is approximately 60% people and delivery leadership and 40% technical engagement. You will be responsible for leading, coaching, and developing your team while staying technically engaged enough to guide architecture, review designs, and unblock complex work. You will own delivery and operational outcomes end-to-end, balancing roadmap commitments with reliability, security, technical debt, and data-sovereignty requirements.
Key responsibilities include: creating clear ownership and healthy delivery practices for team members; establishing predictable planning and execution rhythms while surfacing risks early; partnering with Product and Data Science to translate customer and detection needs into executable plans; guiding the technical direction of distributed cloud and data systems; strengthening production ownership through improved observability and incident response; helping the team adopt AI-assisted software-development workflows; acting as a player-coach by reviewing designs and contributing to high-leverage initiatives; and managing stakeholder expectations with clarity and transparency.
Success metrics include building trusted relationships within the first two months, introducing clearer planning rhythms by month three, achieving greater team autonomy and predictable delivery within the first year, and measurable improvements in detection quality, platform reliability, and delivery speed. You should position yourself for growth into broader leadership scope based on demonstrated impact.
The role offers a flexible hybrid working model with three required office days per month in Budapest and flexibility to work from home or the office for the remainder of the month.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Around 7-8 years of relevant software engineering experience, including at least 3-4 years in an engineering leadership role
- Experience leading, coaching, and developing software engineers through delegation, feedback, growth conversations, and performance management
- Strong backend or distributed systems experience, with the ability to guide architecture and design trade-offs
- Practical familiarity with AI-assisted software development, including the use of coding agents to plan, implement, test, or troubleshoot software
- Track record of delivering and operating reliable production systems while balancing product delivery, platform health, security, and technical debt
- Excellent cross-functional communication skills and ability to turn ambiguous goals into clear priorities and delivery plans
- Professional proficiency in English and ability to collaborate across teams, disciplines, and locations
PREFERRED:
- Experience as a player-coach leading a small, highly technical engineering team
- Experience building or operating high-volume, low-latency distributed systems
- Background in fraud, spam, abuse, risk detection, or telecommunications
- Experience with AWS, Kubernetes, or other cloud-native production environments
- Experience partnering closely with Data Science teams
- Familiarity with SIP or other telecommunications technologies
- Experience with Scala, Haskell, Python, or JavaScript codebases
