First Due is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead and develop a team of software engineers while shaping technical strategy, delivery execution, and operational excellence. The company's mission is to prevent first responder injury or death by providing fire and EMS agencies with transformative, end-to-end software solutions.
In this role, you will combine strong technical leadership with people management and cross-functional collaboration to ensure teams deliver scalable, reliable, and customer-focused solutions. You will lead, mentor, and develop engineers through coaching, performance management, career development planning, and regular feedback. You'll partner closely with Product, Design, QA, and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality software aligned with business objectives and customer needs.
Key responsibilities include providing technical leadership on architecture, system design, scalability, security, and engineering best practices; driving planning, estimation, prioritization, and execution across the full product development lifecycle; establishing and maintaining engineering standards, development processes, code review practices, testing strategies, and operational procedures. You will support teams in identifying and resolving technical challenges, help unblock complex efforts, and facilitate sound engineering decisions.
Additionally, you will monitor team health, delivery performance, and velocity while continuously improving engineering effectiveness; lead hiring efforts, workforce planning, and onboarding to build and scale high-performing teams; collaborate across distributed teams and stakeholders to ensure effective communication and alignment across functions and time zones; serve as an escalation point for critical production issues and coordinate incident response and root cause analysis; help establish operational readiness practices including support models, on-call processes, and monitoring; and contribute to long-term technology strategy and roadmap planning, balancing current business needs with future scalability and innovation. The role also involves leveraging AI Software Development practices to implement department SDLC goals and objectives.
This is a fully remote position reporting to the Director of Engineering. The role is full-time with minimal travel expectations.
