You will report to the Director of Engineering and lead the engineering team responsible for Scheduling, one of Deputy's most heavily used and business-critical features. Scheduling is where business demand, employee availability, labour costs, and compliance converge, powering over a billion shifts globally. This is a technical engineering leadership role combining the complexity of a mature product with opportunities to modernize workflows, improve performance for enterprise customers, and explore AI-driven enhancements. You will develop deep product and architecture understanding to contribute meaningfully to technical discussions, coach senior engineers, and guide pragmatic trade-offs. During your first few months, you will spend time in the codebase and may contribute targeted changes. Over time, your greatest impact will come through team performance and growth. Key responsibilities include: - Leading and growing engineers with varied experience levels through clear expectations, useful feedback, and coaching on performance and career development - Building a team culture that encourages challenging ideas, learning from mistakes, and maintaining high standards - Creating clarity during priority shifts, surfacing risks early, and maintaining predictable delivery cadence - Hiring thoughtfully and reducing single points of failure through cross-skilling and deliberate resourcing - Developing deep understanding of Scheduling's product and architecture to contribute to technical decisions - Working with senior engineers to set technical direction and make decisions on architecture, frameworks, and build-versus-buy trade-offs - Guiding improvements to performance, reliability, security, and maintainability of a multi-tenant global product - Staying close to engineering work through design reviews, architecture discussions, incident learning, and targeted proofs of concept - Partnering with Product, Design, and Data to turn strategy and customer problems into a focused roadmap with measurable outcomes - Balancing near-term customer value with technical investment needed for speed, dependability, and enterprise scale - Keeping the team connected to Deputy's goals and explaining context behind priorities - Using AI-assisted and agentic development tools on real work and forming informed views on their effectiveness - Helping the team develop effective practices for machine-drafted code, including review, testing, observability, and documentation - Maintaining quality standards for correctness, security, maintainability, and understanding - Collaborating on customer-facing AI capabilities regarding evaluation, guardrails, cost, latency, and graceful failure Deputy is becoming an AI-native company, empowering employees to use AI tools and thinking in day-to-day work with training, support, and freedom to use AI responsibly and creatively. REQUIREMENTS: - Experience leading engineers as an Engineering Manager or senior engineer who has taken responsibility for technical direction, delivery, and growth of others; open to experienced managers and lead engineers moving into first formal management role - Strong technical judgment; ability to engage deeply in design discussions, challenge assumptions, and explain engineering decisions to technical and non-technical leaders - Experience delivering and operating customer-facing software, including trade-offs between delivery speed, reliability, and long-term maintainability - Track record of developing engineers through clear expectations, regular feedback, and thoughtful coaching - Experience partnering with Product and Design to shape priorities and deliver outcomes, not treating engineering as a work queue - First-hand experience with AI development tools; opinions informed by using them with critical review capability - Ability to create momentum in ambiguous situations by identifying constraints, bringing right people together, and making practical decisions Nice to haves: - Building and operating distributed, cloud-native, or multi-tenant SaaS systems at scale - Designing for resilience across services, event-driven systems, and large relational or NoSQL data stores - Shipping LLM-backed or agentic capabilities in production - Working on workforce management, scheduling, or operationally complex products
