DEUNA is a rapidly growing fintech startup revolutionizing global commerce with ATHIA, an AI-powered orchestration and payments platform. The company helps large enterprises boost approval rates, reduce costs, and unlock new revenue through payment intelligence, checkout optimization, and data orchestration. With deep integrations across 300+ payment service providers and alternative payment methods, DEUNA powers over 20% of Mexico's digital economy and is expanding into the U.S. market to serve large retailers, marketplaces, airlines, and QSRs.
You will manage a team of approximately 7-8 engineers spanning ML, backend, and platform disciplines. This is a hands-on management role where you will stay close to technical details to guide architecture decisions, unblock your team, and represent the group's roadmap to product and leadership. While you won't write production code day-to-day, you need sufficient depth in ML systems, backend services, and AI/LLM workflows to make sound architectural calls, review technical approaches, and coach engineers through complex problems.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing and growing the AI/ML and platform engineering team through hiring, performance development, and career growth
- Coaching engineers through technical design decisions, code and architecture reviews, and trade-offs
- Setting engineering standards for code quality, testing strategy, and CI/CD practices
- Guiding architecture for ML model lifecycle work (training, evaluation, monitoring, retraining) and LLM-powered workflows (agent orchestration, RAG pipelines, vector DB integrations)
- Overseeing inference services supporting live payment routing with strict latency and reliability requirements
- Ensuring AWS infrastructure, CI/CD, and observability practices meet high standards
- Applying sound judgment on PCI-DSS and data-handling requirements for payment data
- Driving accurate costing and delivery estimates, keeping the team accountable to commitments
- Translating product vision into executable technical roadmaps with clear timelines and trade-offs
- Partnering with product, operations, and modeling leadership to maintain short feedback loops and aligned priorities
- Representing the AI/ML engineering team's progress and blockers to leadership
The tech stack includes Go, Python, gRPC & REST APIs, event streaming, AWS (ECS/EKS, Terraform, RDS/Aurora, S3), PyTorch/TensorFlow, XGBoost/scikit-learn, MLflow/W&B, LangGraph/LangChain, RAG systems, vector databases, and observability tools like Prometheus/Grafana and OpenTelemetry.

REQUIREMENTS:
- 8+ years in software engineering, including 2-3+ years in a people management role leading engineers
- Significant experience building and shipping backend and/or ML systems at scale
- Proven track record managing engineers: hiring, developing, and retaining teams while balancing people development with delivery pressure
- Hands-on familiarity with modern AI/ML systems: model training and serving, LLM-powered workflows (agents, RAG, orchestration), or similar
- Practical production experience with LLM-based systems (agents, RAG, or AI workflow orchestration)
- Clear communication skills with both technical teams and cross-functional partners
- Comfort in fast-moving startup environments with shifting priorities
- Fintech, payments, or regulated-industry background is a strong plus but not required
